    Default Hydrocele

Wondering if there is anyone who has had a boy with a hydrocele and had it go away after 6mths or has been through surgery to remove it.

My DS2 is 7mths old and has a massive hydrocele - the poor thing; it hangs down to the top of his knees. It is growing as he grows and I hate to think how large it will be if we wait until he's 2yrs to get the surgery done as standard. I've had him in toddler nappies (size 10-15kg) since he's been 8kg and now he's 10kg have to move him up a size to contain everything.

Just wanted to chat with anyone who may have been through this or something similar.

Neither of my sons have but I was under the impression that most self seal within 12 months of birth or they do surgery just after they turn one.

I hope you find someone else who has gone through or is going through a similar thing. Being a Mum of a child with any health issue is tough and it helps to have someone in the same boat to chat to.

My DS has one and is going in for surgery for it in a matter of hours. I will let you know how it goes but apparently is straightforward- worst part is they have to go under GA. Not looking forward to today

My DS is 21 months now and has had the hydrocele since birth and the surgeon has said his is quite nasty. Very large. The biggest worry was it becoming a hernia, which is obviously very dangerous and can happen quickly.
As to when they do the op- it depends on each case. We left it a little longer because the fluid still had some movement in it. But we were advised that after about 3 years it becomes more likely it will herniate.

Will keep you posted- feel free to ask any questions :-)

My DS2 had a hydrocele, it didn't go by itself so they operated when he was 15 months old. He had to go under GA, but the op was quick and it was just day surgery. He was back up and running around the next day.
His was big, but nowhere near how big your DS's is. I would be getting a second opinion if I were you, the size is extreme and it sounds like a quality of life issue, I can't believe the haven't operated yet
Good luck, I hope you can get it sorted soon

Thanks for the replies everyone. My little man is only 7mths old and the pediatic surgeon wont touch it till he's at least 2. We are trying to wait as long as possible to let it go away by itself. When he was four months old his teste without the hydrocele spontaneously dissappeared so the 2% risk factor with surgery becomes really important to us. I just hate it that I can't do anything for him.

Good luck themissingpiece. I'm thinking of your son.

mim - It wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion. Thanks
