Default my 18mth old won't sleep thru

in the past 2 or 3 months my 18 nth old has taken to waking at about 3 or 4 am EVERY NIGHT!! we fight putting him down and the he screams so go back in settle him and put him back down etc etc until I end up taking him out of his cot and bringing him into bed with us just so we can get some sleep!!
we are due for another baby in a few months so we want to move ds into a big boy bed but I need some advise on getting him to sleep otherwise he will be getting out of his big bed all night

Hi firsttimemummi - could he be getting cold? We had the same thing with our DS. While he was still in his cot we put him in a grobag, but once we moved him into a bed this was no longer safe so now I put 2 pairs of warm pj's on him. He would stay under blankets, hence the grobag or double layering!

In response to moving him to a big boy bed, we put a baby gate on his doorway and made his room safe and let him go - he use to get out of bed and play for a bit then fall asleep on the floor. Maybe give that a go. My DS is 21 months and we moved him to a bed at 17 months.
