    Default Speech Issues

DD has troubles with some sounds like:

M (her friends Monet & Monique are Benet & Bonique)

    Y (yellow = lellow)

S (but only for saltanas, which she still calls batanas)

C (but only for the word container = botainer)

When you tell her the word & what the sounds should be in regards to M, she can say it, I think she is just being lazy. With the Y she can say 'ya ya ya' then you say yellow and it's lellow again. Saltanas I think is a habit as with container as she says these letters fine every other time.

But DS (was 3 in Aug), I know he was an early talker and early putting sentences together & he is fantastic with his speech and sounds most of the time (well ahead of others his age in his class).

So I don't know what to compare her to.

Do you think I should look into speech therapy or anything or just try and work on these sounds with her when I hear her say them incorrectly?

My ds will be 4 in Dec and still says lellow. He also says dot (got), uses w for an r sound. He was a late talker and I find he is continually picking up the new sounds and improving his vocabulary.

I'm not worried. I think that it all comes in time. They say to repeat what they are saying properly and they will try and mimic you.

    How old is she ?

My DS is about to turn 5 and he still has issues with some letters.
It's normal and it will develop and all fall into place over time.

His "th" sound is "s" (sank-you)
    He still says lellow.
He double's the "ed" in words (stop-ded instead of stopped, watch-ded instead of watched).
    And a few others.

I say don't worry about it.

My almost 4yr is exaclty the same (he can say yellow though) But with every other letter you mentioned he does the same and I also put it down to laziness because when we say the word out in syllables to him, he can say it fine. Each day me or DP will spend half an hour with him using either flash cards or a book and we will ask him what is this object/person/thing/place etc is and ask him to repeat it to us, If he does a pretty good job we will give him a stciker/treat. It is definietly helping him exapnd his vocab and become more confident with his letters and words, he still has trouble saying some letters or sounds, but has gotten much better. I do believe that most of the time they grow out of it with age though so I wouldn't worry to much.

My DD is 5 and has a severe articulation delay (speech issues in laymans terms!).

By what you've described I don't think you have anything to worry about, as she CAN make the sounds but is selective in where she uses them.

I'd suggest maybe using some flashcards with her and practicing using the correct sounds. Speech therapy is really only useful when the child needs help learning how to make the sound.

I WAS your little girl hee hee. What I mean is I used to speak similar however I would use D in place of nearly all letters when speaking in a sentence.

I used to be schooled from home (school of the air) and one day I heard a recording of myself (I guess I was 5 ish??) and I said to mum - Dat dirl dalks dunny (that girl talks funny) - mum gently pointed out that girl was me!! Apparently I started to sound out my letters much better after that. Mum thinks it was just a habit / lazy thing with me.

So hopefully its just an age thing x
