Default Victorian Car Registration renewal - What do I do?

My father has left his car with me (in Qld) whilst he has gone overseas. It is registered in Victoria and the sticker says the registration expires today.

I tried searching for the Department of Transport in Victoria but it doesn't seem to have any information about private vehicle registration. Who should I contact regarding renewal of registration of a Victorian car? Does it require a roadworthy like NSW, or just the fee being paid like Qld?

In Qld, if it doesn't get paid on time, you get a 30 day grace period (during which time you are not permitted to drive the vehicle) to pay it with an additional fee (over $40). If you go over 30 days then you cannot renew it and will require to go through the process of a new registration. Does Victoria have similar rules?

Yes. Very similar. You need to contact vicroads. You can do it online or ring and ask for an extension. No roadworthy necessary.

Thank you. I am now currently on hold with VicRoads. Hopefully privacy limitations wont make it too difficult to pay the renewal.

    Good news and bad news.

Good news: Privacy regulations weren't a problem; They looked everything up for me.

Bad news: They have no record of him paying the renewal back in March, which automatically cancelled the registration in June. Since it is now more than three months out of date, it cannot be renewed. If he can find proof of payment back then, then it will be able to be rectified. If not, I guess he will be in a pickle when he gets back.

He will need a roady to re register it when he gets back if that's the case.

Agree - he will need to take it to a mechanic, pay to get a roadworthy certificate, and then take that to vicroads... Depending on the car (or what mood vicroads are in at the time lol) they may want check it too. He can go to vicroads and pay to get a temp. Permit so that he can drive it to the mehanics, because if he gets pulled over and caught driving an unregistered car, you can't register it until the fine is paid - and I'm pretty sure the fine is the same amount as the rego fee.... My rego in January was around $640ish!!
