    Default My donor journey

    Hi all,

Thank Missleo for asking after me

Well it's been an up and down ride and its only now l feel l can tell my story.

We arrived to Joburg on the 8th and headed out to pilannesburg game reserve (thanks Laned for the recommendation) it was amazing we had 3 days of amazing wild life interactions that will last a lifetime and we hope to one day do again - hopefully a trip as a family

We had our first appointment with Medfem clinic - Dr Rodrigues on Tuesday the 12th. Our donor had been in for a scan that morning and the Dr couldn't believe the similarity we shared with the donor both physically and in nature which was nice to hear. My lining was lovely and thick 12mm and ready to go (I had a scan with my Melbourne ivf specialist on the day before flying out at which my lining was at 5mm so he increased meds to get it pumped up - cant thank my Melbourne dr enough for his support mentally and with meds and medical certificate for my time away.)

So to the down side at this first appointment we were told our donor had only 5 follicles so we could expect maybe 4 eggs!!! We also found out that our donor had donated twice before and had retrieved 12 eggs both cycles with one couple becoming pregnant. The profile had said that our donor had not donated before so I had not thought to question this of Nurture. And really based on her previous cycles we would not have changed our choice but didn't really like the surprise on the back of a low response cycle. So we walked away from our first appointment a bit in shock and disappointed as I had always experienced a low response with myself I was really looking forward to the idea of lots of options. However I am still so grateful that we even have a donor and the option to turn to, so after the initial disappointment my supportive DH talked me around and we held hope for still a successful outcome.

So egg retrieval on the 14th and we got 2 eggs yep 2 eggs again we couldn't believe it but at this stage pretty much had to laugh. They did a HBA test for the sperm and fortunately were able to fertilise both eggs naturally.
So on the plus side both eggs fertilised and by day 3 we had an 8 cell and 10 cell then by day five - yesterday 19th - we had a blastocyst in one and a forming blastocyst in the other (l couldn't face asking how they graded them as i wanted to stay as positive as possible although they said they looked good) so both we're transferred by guided ultrasound (only done for Ozzie patients at Medfem as that is what they know we expect normally not done).

The staff were very friendly and supportive and as Laned has commented there processes are "relaxed".

We had to get the accounts to hand write a tax invoice as they normally only give a statement which we found strange but were happy they accommodated us after explanation.

We stayed at Da Vinci hotel which is attached to the santon city shopping mall so we have had plenty of shopping and eating options.

I have been battling my inner programming that tells me without egg numbers you have no success but have to remind myself that it is different with younger eggs and that miracles can happen.

For the records my donor is 24 yrs old got a AMH of 2.15. (they say anything over 1.2 on their SA scale is good and most donors get between 2.5 -5 over 5 can be heading towards PCOS) AMH scale is 0-10 different from ozzie scale.

I didn't request this test and when I got the result would have liked higher but was two weeks off leaving so went with it. I asked about a antral follicle count but they said they just go with AMH, in future I would now feel the antral scan would be worth having - as I said I felt a little bit far down the line and just thought I'd hope for the best, I really didn't dream 2 eggs was possible from a young donor - live and learn.

Hope all is well for everyone,

Once I'm back lll go through the thread to congratulate those who have had wonderful baby news.

Its dinner time here so heading out now for something - the weather has been great and food very affordable.

    love to all

    Hi Pixel,

Bugger about the 2 eggs but as you say, it happens and hey, people have become pregnant with just one and you are right, it is younger eggs so you stay positive. Thinking of you and sending good wishes. Enjoy your time and let us know how you are doing. When are you home?

    Hi ladies,

Jed- thinking of you and your bubbas.
Pixel- it's good to hear from you, I wouldn't worry , how many times do we hear of lots of eggs at retrieval then by day 5 there's only a few left! So having 2 good ones at day 5 I think is still a good result. I feel confident for you.

    Hi everyone

laned - I know it's not exactly what you were hoping for but the numbers are on your side for your bubba. I'm sure it's a very stressful time for you, fingers crossed all goes OK in the next 2 weeks.

Jed - I don't even have any words except to say I am thinking about you and sending you my best. I'm sure your precious little ones are fighters. Please let us know how it goes.

Pixel - very proud of you for being positive in a difficult situation. After the excitement of starting your adventure I'm sure you feel a little let down. We are all very lucky to even have this option available to us but it's not a foolproof solution and the reality is we are dealing with nature...there is only so far it can be manipulated. By sharing your story I'm sure it really helps those ladies who are yet to travel to prepare for the gamble. And Nicole is a perfect example of what can happen with just 2 eggs!!! When are you doing your test? Make sure you rest up, it's very important.

Pixel - Congratulations on being PUPO....it sounds like you have 2 very nice little embies on board....and I back up everyone's sentiments about the quality of younger eggs...I would take 2 x 24 year old eggs anyday over 6 x older eggs. Good on you for remaining positive....snuggle in little embies!

    Default Thank you

Thanks so much for your support - I have no sense of it "working" yet and have never been pregnant so really don't know whether I will know. But having read others on this thread before me they have said they didn't know.
I swing between feeling really positive (your comments have really helped) to scared and nervous as I so desperately want this to be our time.
Then of course when I get nervous I feel bad about feeling nervous as I know I should think positive - fortunately the nervous times are in the minority but ****ty when I go there.
Today is our last full day of rest before the long flight tomorrow so lll be making the most of the hotel bed.
    Love to all

Pixel - I think that we can all sympathise with you and I KNOW I will feel exactly like you when it is my turn. We have all been through the angst, the ups and downs and the unknowns with IVF and it doesnt get any easier. We are not there physically with you but we are right beside you in spirit. Enjoy your last day with your feet up in SA.
