Hopeandprayer....I dont understand what you mean when you say at CFC they didnt have the level of experience you would expect. What does that mean? We are scheduled for July to go there and I guess that as we are walking this road blindfolded, maybe we can learn something. I have only read good reports so I would love to know what you mean. I thought they would have a good experience level, judging by what all the others say. AT my clinic here, the embie is up on the monitor with my surname written next to it and then is put into the catheter. Is that what you meant by identifying the embryo?

    Hi ladies

Thanks for all the information, I got a donor profile from Sunshine and has anyone else noticed alot of the donors with these agencies smoke? I know alot say socially or a few a day on their form. Will this affect the quality of eggs?

DJSEARS, I have to admit that was the first negative comment I've read as well about CFC. I've read some negative feedback about other places in SA but CFC has had great reviews.

Summershine, thanks for the info, I contacted CFC and she explained the tests etc so that was a help. I see you only have about 5 weeks to go I guess it worked for you. Thanks for the info I do appreciate it

    Hi everyone

We returned from Cape Town late last night - what an amazing 3 weeks!! I have travelled a lot and can honestly say South Africa is one of the most amazing places I have ever visited. I absolutely will be back.

So this mornings POAS tells us we have a positive . Not getting too excited till the blood test tomorrow since I have a history of unviable pregnancies, but fingers crossed.

Welcome to all the new ladies - I turned my back for a second and the thread participants had doubled in size!! Looks like a lot of people already confirmed to travel in the next few months so good luck to you all. If anyone has any specific questions about where to stay, how it all works etc feel free to PM me. My doctor was Dr Wiswedel but I also had a little bit of contact with Dr LaRoux.

Hopeandprayer - it would be great if you could give the ladies some specific information on the doctor/agency you used, the specific complaints and the year that you travelled. Since it is the first negative comment we have had it would be helpful to get more than generalisations so the ladies can use this info when making their decision about travelling to CT for the procedure. My embies absolutely were identified and the clinic absolutely was professional, my only complaints were quite minor in the scheme of things and what people need to remember is this clinic is VERY busy...they work 6 days a week and the waiting room is constantly full of patients (at least 50% of them Australian I was told..) If you are expecting to be treated like royalty it's not going to happen....but you wont be treated like a number. I also have minor complaints about the 2 local clinics I have used like I'm sure everyone does and CFC is no different. Anyone who has done long term IVF knows this process is not all sunshine and rainbows. CFC is not the golden solution to everyone's infertility, but they are getting great results and doing what our local system and clinics can't.

Personally I had no problem paying car parking attendants the equivalent of 50 cents (!!) they were asking. OK it's not governed the way we would like it to be but this is how these poor people feed their families, and it would cost me 10 times that amount to park on the street in Sydney. They are just trying to make a living in a country that has astronomically high unemployment and little support from the government to fix the inequality. We tipped generously and paid people like porters and car attendants well and never had any issues...a total of no more than a few dollars a day. I'm not saying it is 100% safe but just be smart about things, I can find serious trouble in Kings Cross in less than 5 minutes if I go looking for it - CT is no different.

Just remember Cape Town itself is quite small. If you aren't going to hire a car then do not stay there for longer than needed for your procedure as you will have seen it all during that time. However I recommend everyone does hire a car and spend the time between appointments staying in other parts of the Western Cape - there's some amazing wine country only an hour or so away and the little towns are gorgeous, up north is quite beautiful with stark and rugged coastline, go on a safari which will take you about 3 hours inland, enjoy the beaches and views along the cape and make the drive around False Bay. Everything is very cheap. The food is simply amazing, the shopping is very reasonable and the people are generally hardworking, kind and warm. Take advantage of every spare minute you have and don't do anything stupid to put yourself in danger (the same as any other country!) and you will have the absolute time of your life.

Personally I only had one extremely negative experience and that was before we left when dealing with one particular agency who only show adult photos (I don't even need to name names!) - from what I have picked up from talking to other people and my own experience their donors are NOT based in SA no matter what they tell you. The best advice I can give everyone is just stick to the list of agencies approved by CFC, there is a reason they will only use them.

Will let you all know how it goes tomorrow

Fab news missleo. Hope you get good beta numbers tomorrow on your BT.

Missleo - agree with everything you have said about CT. We were last there 10 years ago and after travelling through Middle east and Narobi down to capetown. In any of these places you use your common sense and dont openly flash money/cameras or things on the street.

Hope and prayer - like others have said - there is no guarantee however myself and others that are planned to go there and have been there the information we have been getting out of the clinic has been amazing. Great customer service often better than the clinics here.

I did notice that a lot of the donors said they smoked. I know 2 of the agencies I contacted said that donors would smoke for 1-2 months prior to EPU if asked.

There are 1-2 donors I have found through gift ov life that fit the bill. We are just waiting to see outcome of current cycle we are doing with FS before committing to anything.

I have found feedback from the agencys to be amazing - all questions have been asnwered.

We thought we would shortlist 2-3 donors asnd then send photos of us over. I cant remember who asked but I got some info from gift ov life around previous donor collections and they have said dont be scared to use an unproven donor particular if she is under 25.

Hope everyone else is having a nice day.

Hope everything is going well with your boys WJ and you are making the most of the first couple of days.

    Have a nice Sunday all.

    Jane.

Just wanted to add to what Midnite has touched on re unproven donors. Someone has to use these girls first and with the waiting lists the proven donors now have, and the limited times they can donate, there are not going to be any donors left. If a girl is under the age of 25 and all her medical testing is fine there should be no issues. It is no more or less a gamble than using a proven or unproven donor...as was Jennilee's case when her donor retrieved lower in this cycle than her last cycle. And I see my donor is now not available for her next (and last) donation until December - that's a 10 month break and I assume it's because she was over-stimulated in my cycle and the one previous (with 20 eggs retrieved in each) and they are concerned. I am probably lucky to get the retrieval rates that I did and if she was going into another cycle in 2 months she probably wouldn't get the same results.

Great news MissLeo! I'm giving you a tentative congratulations until you give me the go ahead to give you a really big hearty congratulations at the top of my lungs.

Good to hear you had no issues in CT and with CFC - I've also been reading all of this thread along with 2 or three others on Fertility Friends UK spanning back to 2007 or something ridiculous like that and hadn't seen any really negative comments at all. I'm sorry you had a bad experience though Hopeandaprayer - hopefully you will find a clinic that works for you next time around - you need to be comfortable with the treatment you receive that's for sure.

Crystal - re the smoking thing - I think it's just a young persons thing - God knows all my friends smoked in their 20's - and those who chose to went on to have babies without issue. I can understand why you might be concerned, but I just look at it like at least that donor is being honest. I guess you have to take the good with the bad in these situations.

DJ very exciting as it's getting to the pointy end for you on this journey and Sunny too. I'm trying not to get too ahead of myself as I'm still about to start another stim cycle here but keep looking at tripadvisor on Cape Town info. Is there any point in me contacting CFC now to 'get the ball rolling' so to speak? Or just wait and see how this cycle goes?

No one answered my question a while back re total costs of a DE trip from Aus though - do you think $13k would be enough inc. flights and accommodation? Or would it be more? I'm just trying to get my head around how much we'll need to save.
Also after reading the Fertility Friends Uk threads I'm wondering if anyone here has used Asset Chemist for medications - it seems a lot of the ladies from Aus and NZ were using them a while back as they were about 1/2 the cost of the international pharmacy... any recent experiences appreciated.

    Thanks
    Em

WJ hope you are enjoing your cuddle time with your boys.... what did you name them ?

MISSLEO fantastic news... I also POAS day before BT was due crossing everything for great numbers.

Hopeandprayer - sorry you had a bad experience, as mine was great! I found CFC to be extremely helpful, kind and professional everytime they dealt wth me I used Dr Heyen and couldnt speak highly enough of him when we had our transfer my name was on the ultra sound pictures - which is more than I have had here with the two clinics i have used over the years.......

Nothing in life is 100% Guaranteed but CFC have a 70% sucess rate which s better than any clinic in australian offer for me!!!

We spent just over two weeks in CT and Absolutely loved every minute, there is so much to see and do as Missleo said hire a car and get around - WE fell in love with it and would return again !

Emski72 - 13k sounds about right, depending on what time of year your flying as flights can really vary in cost.. We flew singapore airlines which seemed to be the cheapest and quickest fight path at the time... we paid $3800.00 return for two adults - Food is quite cheap in SA we also choose to rent a self contained apartment which came recommended by CFC for around $70 aus per night so was cheaper than most hotels.....

Welcome to all the newbies .... may your dreams come ture !

well things are ticking along nicey for us - progesterone leveled out and numbers were perfect ( Drs words ) last BT, so now we are just waiting for a scan which is bked for the 15th March..

Jennilee- hows things going for you hun ?

    take care all

    Hi ladies

Hi carita, i like Singapore airlines - we could have flown qantas but it was more $$$$$

Im was with concept before we did SA and they helped me with meds etc - have you asked your clinic ? I know pivet won't help.... CFF gave me a list of ways to get the meds and how many of each I required, if FS won't help ask your local GP maybe...... Enjoy your trip it's a beautiful place
