    Hi All,

I have been checking in and out every now and the. To see how you as all going. Helenmac I was sorry to read that your cycle didn't work I had such positive thoughts for you, hopefully they will be able to meet the NK Cells head on and your next cycle will be the one.

To the rest of you best of luck in your up and coming cycles.

Yes Matthew is home and has been for a little while, with the odd trip back to hospital due to viruses he picks up from my father whom incidentally is not allowed near him but manages to spread his germs anyway grr. I am looking to go on the rollercoaster again this time using my own egg which was frozen some years ago. I need to see a sspecialist first to try and stop or minimize per eclampsia we decided that should this not work then Matthew would be it, which I am fine about especially after what we have been through.

Good luck and lots of baby dust to you all xxx

    Hi Everyone!

Thanks to everyone who provided advice on how to get my meds etc without the help of my local clinic. Thankfully my clinic ended up coming to the party and have agreed to help me out with scans and meds etc so phew - its a stressful enough process as it is without having to deal with un-cooperative clinics!

WJ- Good luck with your transfer today! Hoping you've got some lovely blasts to transfer! When do you head home?

Helenmac - glad to hear that you are feeling a little better. It never ceases to amaze me that we manage to find the strength to pick ourselves up out of the gutter time after time after so many disappoinements but somehow we always seem to manage. Great to hear that you have made an appt with a specialist, hopefully he can suggest some strategies so you can give yourself the best chance with your two remaining frosties.

JodiW - I am new to this thread so sorry don't know all the background but just wanted to say a big thanks for starting this thread as its wonderful to be able to chat to other ladies in a similar situation! And good on you for making such an important decision - big fingers crossed for your last little frostie!

    Hi to everyone else!

    Hi all,
Just a short update to tell you of my day 5 results....5 beautiful blasto's which Dr Heylen (charming fellow) was very pleased with (and so were we!) So we put two in, and they were already hatching out, which Doc said was excellent. 3 are in the freezer...now the 3 days rest, with trashy books and cable telly.More acu on monday, but did a before and after yesterday, so I was totally knocked out when I got back to my place.
    Bye for now, WJ

Helen mac - my heart goes out to you. I am so sorry for the pain you must have in relation to the cycle. I will never understand why the universe and fertility gods cause such pain to those who so desperately wish to give a little being all that they have. I am pleased that you are planning your next round and that you have the consultation of an immunology specialist this time. Take care of yourself and be kind to yourself.

Jodi - it is good to read that your little man is getting on. Wow what a scary time you seem to have had.

Jed - fabulous news about your clinic. Funny I have been with the same group in Qld for 2.5 years now and at first I didn't think they were going to be all that helpful. That said they have thankfully come around.

WilsonJ - I am so very excited for you. What a wonderful result. Wishing you the very best and hoping like crazy that those little embeds settle into their mumma. Rest up and enjoy the books.

AFM - finally had contact from the clinic this evening indicating donor all set to go. Psych and bloods came back good to go. Interestingly, the nurse was a lot more amenable in her correspondence this time.

Just out of interest, how many days did you guys arrive before the donors EPU. We arrive on 19 Aug and were hoping for the EPU to be attended on either the 21 or 22, but don't know if that's cutting it to fine. Your responses would be greatly appreciated.

    Default hello ladies,

hello to all the wonderful women in this forum. I haven't posted here since February but thoght it wise to log on and give some updates.
First of all, congratulations to Jodi and Theresa and any other ladies with BFP. For those who haven't gotten their miracles yet, it's just a matter of time, u will get there.
For those of u who don't know anything about me, i am based inthe US and have been struggling with infertility for abt 7yrs. Dh and i decided to try a donor cycle in SA for the first time. Dh was unable to travel with me, so we shipped his speciment to SA (expensive but efficient). the whole process of obtaining import permit and shipping specimen was less that 3weeks. Will gladly help with any questions
We picked our donor through giftovlife. Dawn was very helpful with the selection process. we decided to go with an unproven 24yrs old donor, don't ask me why, she just seemed to be talking to me. I got all my medications shipped from a pharmacy from london. I had never done any immune testing or hidden C, but decided to self medicate myself and do the in cycle antibiotic treatment of doxycycline and zithromax for 25days from agate faq. I also decided to take prednisone and aspirin without any prescription. Mind u, drs from CFC don't just put u on these drugs, they really don't believe in them
Well, my first apt with CFC(DR LR) was set for may 14th. I arrived in Cape town May 13 after a 21hrs flight from california. I had no idea of how CT was. I was made known that camps bay was the safest place, that is where i stayed for the first 4days.
on my first apt, my dr told me all was ok with donor and that as of date, she has 7 good looking follicles , and retrieval is set for friday. i was not too happy with that news but decided to play cool. Friday came and i was called to notify that only 5 eggs were retrieved. I was almost in tears. At that point i had realised that being in CT by myself and not able to drive around bc we drive on the left side in the states, i decided to move somewhere closer to the clinic. I found this lovely self catering apartment- lynwood. it was very secure and quiet, 10-15mins walk to the clinic.
On saturday, the embryologist called to say out of 5, only 2 did fertilize. I knew then that was it for me, this trip was a wasted one. i knew i wasn't going to have a transfer. FYI if u ever find ursef in this situation, always ask for the back up donor if u did sign the agreement at this point. if u wait till after 3 days, it will be too late to use backup.
Anyway, i let loose on saturday and sunday cos i knew i wasn't goint to have a transfer anyway. i called and cancelled my before and after transfer accupuncture appointments. I was ready for the worst
Monday, i walked 15 mins to the Clinic, dr l r saw me and passed by with a quick fake smile, i was like "yeah u r right, i already know". Well 12p, he ulshered me to his office and said the donor cycle did not go very well but atleast we have one 8cell to transfer. I said well yes, since i sighed the backup, can't we use that option? that is when he explained that we can only use back up on day of retrieval or next day since ur body is already ready to receive on day 3 to 5. Well i told him no need to transfer this one cos i have had 9 blast tranfered in past cycles with no sucess, and very much doubt what this will do. He encouraged me to go ahead with the transfer which we did. I tid not inform him abt my extra medications but he did warn me against aspirin, so stopped it on transfer day. I also refused to use crinone bc i think it doen't work well with me.
From day of transfer till 9 days later, i forgot i had a transfer and was off the hock. I enjoyed CT to the fullest. I spent 17days in total and flew back home on may 31st. I had my test on 6/1 and beta came back 201. I am still in disbelief as i am typing this mail. Today i am 8 weeks, had a strong hb of 165 yesterday. God is wonderful. Praying that this one sticks...

Sorry it was a long post, but i guess i was trying to say that there might be bumps on this ride, but we all will def get there some day.

goodluck to all the ladies heading out that way. SA is such a beautiful place.

    Hi Ladies,

Jodi - Thanks, yes hopfully the agressive immune treatment will do the trick. So pleased to hear that Matthew is home with you and good luck with cycling again.

Jed - Thank you and yes you are right we are able to find the strength somewhere and do it all over again. If I didn't have 2 more embies and a plan B it would be the end of the road for us and I'm afraid I would be facing as massive loss and the grief would be enormous having to say goodbye to any chance of carrying another child. I don't know if the next one will work or not but we will be giving it our best shot and hoping for the best.

Wilson - WOW it all sounds so promising and with 3 embies in the freezer it takes the pressure off this FET. I have a good feeling that you'll get your BFP though!! How are you finding staying in Cape Town on your own? Is it daunting? Where are you staying? Close to the clinic?

Laned - Thanks for your kind words. I know I don't understand why some of us have it so tough and others just fall pregant at the drop of a hat! Not fair really. Anyway I'm feeling much better since we have plan B.

Prayermom - I enjoyed reading your story. There seems to be a common pattern to when you think it's all over and then you get the surprise of your life when there's a possitve pregnancy test. I feel a bit like that already with my last attempt and that it probably won't work again, I'm preparing myself for the worst and that way I won't crash emotionally and if it's a BFP well that'll be a lovely surprise.....more like complete shock!

    Hi All,
Well in 24 hours I will be preparing to be picked up to go to the airport...it has been a long tough 2 weeks, and I wish I didnt have to do it on my own this time, but here I am at the other end...
Prayermom I completely understand the rollercoaster ride you have been on. My first cycle was a disaster, and my donor only had 4 follicles. In a desperate dash to make more follicles I believe my donor was given more meds which (due to her poor response) only made the existing follicles grow faster, and we too had that awkward situation of the dr telling us that the cycle was slightly short of a disaster...fortunately 2 made it to day 3, and were put in. I knew from the very beginning that there wasnt much hope for these poor stressed little embryos, and we were off on safari when we had that fact confirmed. Those 2 weeks and indeed the whole trip was the most stressful I have ever had in this IVF journey. We decided to give it another go, and this time, we wanted to meet the agency people face to face. So the day before we left, we went and met up with Tami from Gift ov Life, and she was a calm, empathetic delight, who assured me that when I was back in SA she would help and support me wherever I needed it. We also chose a new donor, and spent literally hours reading over profiles in Gift's comfortable sitting room. Before we left that day, we had a script for depot injection, and estrogen pills, which we filled before we left.
Roll on to now...my beloved left sperm last time which was frozen, and I have come to CT all by myself!! Tami has calmed me when needed, and helped me superbly on the transfer day, driving me around to all my appts. She also organised for their driver to pick me up from the airport, and drop me off. I couldnt fault the service, and it has made a big difference to my general headspace. So this time with 2 blasts on board and 3 in the freezer, I am about to embark on the journey home...
Helenmac I stayed in a private home with a little bedsit attached. Super private, quiet and 15 mins walk from the clinic through safe, pretty streets. The house maid is fantastic and very respectful of privacy, and when out, I always returned to new, fluffy towels and fresh linen. The downside is that without a car, you must buy food and cart it home to cook! There is a lovely little arcade in Dean St, and there is a fantastic bakery called Knead, where they do a mean decaf latte!! and the best croissants outside Paris! As mentioned above, being on my own has been tough and confronting. I realise just how much I rely on my partner when travelling and this compulsory time on my own has given me some personal growth time...anyway, my digs are called Bird Cottage in Claremont.
Will post when I get back! WJ

    Hi Ladies,

WJ - Yay - what a wonderful day 5 result! Huge for a BFP for you in the next few days!!!

Ianed - sounds like everything is falling into place for you. Is it next month that you are planning on going over? I struggle with the idea of having to leave it so close to book flights!!

Prayermom - thanks for sharing that wonderful story - all the best for the rest of your pregnancy - send some of those baby vibes our way

Helenmac - I understand all too well those feelings of grief that are lurking in the background - after 7 years and 12 IVF's this is our last shot so we will be feeling the same if things don't work out for us in SA. Huge that neither of us (or none of us for that matter) have to cross that bridge!

Feeling a bit impatient at the moment as we've done all our bits and pieces and now just waiting for the donor to have her first RE appt and counselling etc. Really just want to see a treatment plan so that we can start making travel plans but I know I just need to sit tight and wait (patience never has been my forte!)

    Jed

Prayermom- thank you for your inspirational posting. Wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy.

Helenmac - thinking of you Hun and hoping you are being kind to yourself.

Wilsonj - have everything crossed for you

Jed- pleased to read that your clinic has come around. I feel your pain in relation to wanting a time table. I ended up just booking air travel and followed later with accommodation. I booked all our accommodation through agoda.com.au

Hope your plans are going well.

AFM - finally got news all should be right for donor EPU between 20-22 Aug. I have asked them to really try for 21st to account for any unforeseen delays considering we are arriving on the 19 th.

The nurse was a lot nicer. Must have had something to do with intervention by DH, who unbeknown to me contacted the agency and told them he did not want me stressed during this process and wanted the agency to liaise with the clinics IVF nurse about her communication with me.

All our accommodation has now been booked and I am slowly starting to get excited, which is something I don't usually do in this fertility game.
