    Default baby's surname?

hello lovely ladies again . i apologise if theres already a thread on this, can't seem to find one tho. as the title says, what do i do? am i allowed to give bub my last name only? i dont like the idea of a hyphenated name. this is my 5th baby. i already have 4 to a previous ex and we were together when they were all born. thank you in advance for any help.

You can give your baby your last name if you want. I think if you wanted to give it the FOB's name then you'd need him to sign the BC or something (nsw this is the case) It's totally up to you. All my kids have my last name, and I would never hyphenate them either- even if i was to get married.

You can use whatever last name you want.

BDM will approve it as long as it's not an obscenity or anything like that

From what I've read (which could be completely wrong) if he were to challenge it and take it to court the most likely ruling would be both (yours and his) in alphabetical order (probably with a hyphen, but I am unsure of that).

I really don't have any real knowledge on the area, but think I read something to that effect.

I dont agree with that at all sorry.

I would give the child your last name but is the child to the FOB of your other children or do they have your maiden name if you didnt get married or never changed it? I would also consider what my other childrens last names were tbh as well.

Goodluck. Hope you work out the right name for bubs

Agree, if they all have the same last name bub may end up feeling left out!!!

my other 4 kids have their dads last name as we had been together while they were all born and had seperated when my youngest was 10 mths old. this new baby has a different dad. i to also get called mrs (kids last name). fob already has 3 other kids with his surname and he wasnt even with 2 of the mums when they were born. it seems like a kinda ownership to him as i have already suggested bub having my last name so hes decided that im dead to him.

The father of my baby (due in 4 weeks) and I were never in a relationship but he is a friend of my BIL, so we're friends and get along well. Although I would have preferred bub to have only my surname, FOB feels strongly that he wants a link to his daughter so we have compromised. I have gone back to my maiden name and this baby will have both our surnames in alphabetical order, hyphenated. Luckily both our surnames are of English origin, so they work well together.

I think each situation is different, I suppose you have to just do what is best for all concerned, including the baby.
