Read this entire thread on Dr Derek Lok, but all of it is about his work on the woman's side of things. Our issue is MFI, and I've heard that he does something similar to the micro-disessection that Dr Golovsky does. Has anyone been to him for this?

    Hi Mummymk,

I was referred to Dr Tang who is now at Demeter Fertiliy. I know she is not at the same place. What are your reasons for not recommend her? We are considering IVF and are considering Dr Tang or Genea.
    Appreciated your help

DH and I saw Dr Lok during the week for MFI, and he was worth every cent of $350 for the 30 minutes consultation. It turns out that he does do the same microdissection procedure that Dr Golovsky does, and said that for Azoospermia that's really the only way to see if there's any sperm in the tubules. He showed us various pictures in books and on the internet to explain what he does, and even gave us a journal article to take home to read. He also prescribe DHwith Anastrozole to help raise testosterone levels before our next IVF/ICSI cycle. Rather glad that DH now has some "real" medicine, as DH is quite skeptical that all the herbs and vitamins he's taking is doing any good at all. We will still see Dr Golovsky as planned in Dec, and will decide then who to go with.

Hi Bertie. I cant think highly of Dr Lok, we also were referred to him through Anne Clark (Fertility First) as DH also has azoospermia. Initially I THINK DH was put on pregnyl (or maybe it was anastrozole?) but that didnt really do anything except he gained a lot of weight! DH was also seeing a chinese herbalist who had prescribed him crushed deer antler and he did quite a fair bit of acupuncture leading up to the extraction. Fast forward, when Lok opened up DH they found sperm in his testes and we got a fair bit of embryos fertilised and had sperm to freeze. Then, our 2nd extraction they didnt find any sperm so we used the frozen sperm to fertilise my eggs and we got great numbers. But we kept on getting BFN all the time. I went and saw an RI (Dr M) and was put on NK cell treatment, and on the 2nd transfer with Dr M (I didnt tell Lok i was seeing him), we fell pregnant. This was my 8th transfer, a FET 2 x 3 day embryos. Im currently 26 weeks PG (6.5 months) with identical twins. So please perservere and ask all the questions and do all the necessary tests available. I wish you all the very best. You are in the best hands with Lok. I was told many times he was the sperm king from alot of the medical people xx

Just an update from us. Our little miracle bub is nearly 5 months & is sleeping soundly in his cot right now. Derek Lok specialises in male factor but is fully capable of handling the female side of things as well. He is such a lovely man & our obgyn described him as 'The Doctor's Doctor' & said that he also does a lot of teaching. Obviously we can't speak highly enough of him. The last TESE he did 17 needle aspirations, still didn't find sperm, didn't give up & surgically removed sperm. We love him!

Hi. I also have an update too. Back in 2011, I posted a question about feedback from anyone who used Dr Devora Lieberman. I was using Dr Lok at the time and I wasn't very happy with the results I had at the time. I got pregnant first try (Feb 2011)and then miscarried at 8 weeks due to trisomy 15. I did another fresh ICSI cycle but implantation wasn't suscessful so I kept few embrios for future frozen cycles. But still wasn't very sure if Dr Lok was doing the right protocol for my Stimulated cycles. Having said that my hubby was diagnosed with male fertility issues so Dr Lok was certainly doing the right thing for hubby. I wish I didn't doubt about Dr Lok's capability and knowledge. He said that the protocol he recommended was the best for me. He did a great job aspiring the best sperm from hubby's. It was just a matter of time. My miscarriage was an unlucky event and he said it is common to miscarriage due to chromosome abnormalities. I am glad I continued my treatment with Dr Lok because in November 2011 I did a frozen embryo transfer and was very lucky to get pregnant with my beautiful Fraternal twins (boy and girl). I had a good but very symptomatic pregnancy (morning sickness) and I was lucky to carried them to 37 weeks and 2 days gestation. My bubs are now 11 and a half months and are the love of our lives. I will always be grateful to Dr Lok for helping us to achieve parenthood. Dr Lok is very professional and knowledgeable. I would highly recommend him to anybody! Good luck to everyone and I wish you all the best.

    Hi All,

TTC for last 2 years naturally and had 2 trisomy MCs.

Going through treatment with Dr Lok at the moment with ICSI and PGD.
Last\fist cycle of IVF, was preg on second transfer for 8 weeks then miscarried (unknown reason).
Currently on second cycle (long cycle this time with different drugs).
Dr Lok has reccommended Intralipid for me. Something must have changed in the last few years =)

Fingers cross all goes well with this cycle. He has been good so far, but am still awaiting a BFP.

Hi Ladies. So glad i came across this website as i am searching for answers as ivf australia are reluctant to give them to me. This was our first ICSI cycle for pgd. My husband was born with a syndrome that can be passed onto our kids 50/50%...Had egg collection 2 weeks ago...9 collected..6 mature...5 fertilised...get a call day 3 to say embryos are doing great grade A....day 5 IVf australia call us to say unfortunately all your embryos have stopped growing and we have cancelled your cycle. DEVASTATED!!! Given false hope Anyway we have moved to GENEA and booked to see Dr Derek Lok as husband has bad sperm count. Can anybody tell me if this has happened to them and if anyone knows much about Dr Lok?

    Thank you

My DH has azoospermia. The most severe MFI. Came across Dr Lok because that's the main issue. Most of the posts here are related to the female factor, though. Anyway, I am a IVFA patient in the end because needing the mTESE. We know that DrLok does the same procedure but Genae doesn't do unknown donor.

I totally understand the disappointment and IVF is certainly a roller coaster ride. Given that this is your first IVF, it is a trial and error. Also, embryo arrest is fairly common. It can be good egg, bad sperm and vice versa. It also depends on your FS if he/she is good. There are so many factors that can go wrong. My counselor told me that there is NO guarantee that it will work but you just have to try again. I have had a great experience at IVFA and love my FS. I'm an interstate patient as well. Even if we have gotten on top of the donor list here in WA earlier, I would still consider going back to the eastern state because my FS is really good. Sorry, I might not sound like giving you an answer about DrLok but just want to point out that so many things can go wrong. IVFA has always been able to grow my embies to day 5 so I have no doubt about the quality of their lab.

    All the best. xx

Shy2015.... I agree with Bbhope. I started at Next Generation Fertility, but had to move to IVFA as they have donor sperm, as Next Gen didn't have DS. I researched Genea, as they have a great reputation, but also don't have DS. Some of our cycles were cancelled due to embryos stopping growing - this is actually very common. Many embryos grow fine to Day 3, but Day 4 is critical, as this is when the sperm plays a major part. Therefore if the sperm isn't great (like my DH and many others on this thread), we rarely got past day 4 - it was kind of like natural selection. Hence why we had to go to DS - many tears to get here, but pretty happy now that I'm finally pregnant.
