Default Artificial membrane rupture-tell me about yours?

Hi ladies, I am 39 weeks with my second child and at docs on weds I found out I was 2cm dilated and 50% effaced so had a s&s done. I have been having false labour/early labour for weeks (a few hours a day of fairly regular mildly painful contractions and period pain). Bub has also been 2/5 engaged for the last 2weeks.

My DH starts a new job on Monday after being out of work for the last three weeks which is really bad timing as he can't really take more than a day or two off if bub is born during the week and I was wondering if I happen to be more dilated now whether I could ask for AMR? I don't even know if that's allowed, and also know that it may not actually send me into active labour and could mean I then need the Syntocin drip etc which I really don't want as I'm aiming for a natural hosp water birth.

Has anyone else had AMR before active labour and what was the outcome? As in did u need further interventions/inductions? What do you think? I just really want my DH to be able to have as much time as he can with bub so it would be great it he/she arrived tonight!!

I was 42 weeks when I went in to be 'induced'. I was 4cm dilated when I got there but had gotten to that point with no pain. As soon as they did ARM I went into active labour and DS was born 7.5 hours later. ARM literally made me go from pretty much feeling nothing to full blown labour immediately.

My hind waters had broken simultaneously but the ruptures my for waters (I think that was it, could have been the other way around). DS2 was born 1hr, 55 minutes later. I had no pain beforehand and wouldn't have known I was in labour if my waters hadn't broken (in Coles FFS).

Thanks! Keep them coming! So would it be crazy or silly or just too organized to call hosp to ask for an internal with a view to potentially break waters if I'm dilated enough even though I'm not in active labour and also not overdue? I don't even know if they would do it?

I doubt they would do that. Once your waters break you are at risk of infection, so they only do it to bring on active labour. That's why they say if your waters break and you don't go into active labour, to go to hospital due to the infection risk. I doubt they would do it then let you go. I imagine that once they do it you would have to stay in hospital and not leave until you have your baby.

I had my waters broken to start labour with my #2 bub due to high BP at 39+4. After a very short and intense 1 hour and 33 minutes he was in my arms

I have no idea how you would go asking to have your waters broken "just because" though IYKWIM. I personally would have rathered wait to go naturally. My #1 and #3 bubs were spontanious (37+4 weeks and 39 weeks) and my labours were much less intense. I also have found (total theory here) that #1 and #3 are much happier babies and I put it down to the fact they were ready to be born. #2 was p!ssed at the world from the start lol, he was comfy where he was

Maybe that's why DS2 seems like he has a bee in his bum some days. He was just rushed a little but more (but no doubt by just a few hours tops. I have quick labours).

I hated it, it felt very much like there was a balloon inside my vagina and she stuck a hook inside and it went *pop* in a toe-curlingly gross way. But not painful. Just - ugh - yuck weird gross confronting. I curled over and cried afterwards.

However. It did bring on nice regular and increasingly strong contractions - which was a good change from niggly back pain every 6 minutes that wasn't doing anything or going anywhere.

I think not having the procedure explained to me properly and not discussing it with me rather just telling me the ob would do it lead to it being a lot more confronting than it needed to be.

Ummm but then they started synto drip anyway and I finished off with a csection. So umm yeah I don't know if I'd have it done again.
