    Default Swan District Hospital

    Hi,

Was just wondering if anyone has delivered at Swan Districts and if so, what their experiences were?

    Thanks!

    Hi Jeje

    Congratulations on your pregnancy!!

I had DD1 (almost 5 years ago now) at Swannies and they were fine. The midwives were always thorough in the antenatal clinic, if not always very supportive of my desire for a natural birth. However, the last 2 midwives I had (they had obviously been middies for a very long time) before I went into labour were wonderful. They gave me lots of reassurance and encouraged me to labour at home for as long as possible before going into the hospital, which I really appreciated.

My birth midwife was amaaaaaaazing. Love love love her

But my post birth care wasn't great. DD and I barely saw a midwife for about 24 hours after my birth (one middie popped in twice and then we went 12 hours before I saw another one) and I got no breastfeeding support at all - I would ring the bell for assistance and would get no answer.

So I think if you deliver there just be clear about what is important to you and be very open with all the midwives at each antenatal appt about what you want and absolutely demand the breastfeeding support!

    I hope that helps!

    Thank you for your help

I had my first at Bentley Hospital and did not have a good experience there at all. I'm keen on getting home as soon as possible afterwards I think (as long as its safe to do so obviously) - I'll keep in mind what you said about the after care though! Thanks

Jeje, Swannies has an Early Discharge program with wonderful midwife support once you are home.
    Definately look into it

had my son there and midwives were exceptional. needless to say, am returning for baby #2.

prenatal care; great combo of midwives and ob/gyns. let me ask all sorts of questions and ran on time with appointments. (am also finding the same this pregnancy too - have been given referral to their physio for back pain and dietician for low glucose free of charge)

labour; were all very happy to let me labour the way i wanted (no pain relief, walking, getting into all crazy positions!!) and really supportive. even had a male midwife who actually delivered me and he was incredible (nominated him for midwife of the year, unfortunately he has left now).

post lavour; i got a room to myself (luck of the draw), friendly midwives went above and beyond with helping me try to breastfeed. even got lactation consultant in as i had a previous breast reduction and had to top up with bottles and formula (and NO judgement by any of them!! sometimes bottle feeding is so political!!)

discharge; visited me at home in toodyay so i didn't have to drive all the way in.

we actually do fundraising at DH's work and just gave them $1000 to maternity dep because of how great they were. needless to say, it is a bit random and i'm sure there are crappy midwives around but so far have yet to find one at swan districts!

I had all 3 of my babies at swannies! The only thing I could fault them for is the FOOD!!! Yuck!!!

The MW's were all lovely and supportive, I was never pressured for internals and the supported my wishes of wanting drug free labors

All in all it was a great experience every time.
