    Question Melbourne Private Hospitals

Just wondering what people have experienced going through Private Melbourne (or Vic) hospitals?

I thought it'd be nice for people to share their experiences so new hubbers (or new to the Private Health section) could have some reviews to look at as I feel like I am going trying to find some recent and decent reviews about hospitals.

If anyone has any feedback on these hospitals (and their OB) I would be extremely grateful.

*I am pretty sure I'll end up at Cabrini but am interested also about St.Vincent / Mercy Hospital and Frances Perry House or any other private hospital in Melbs*

I had all 3 babies at Masada private in East St Kilda. Alot of people aren't even aware it is there. The nursing staff have the time to help you, each room is set up like a hotel room with queen beds and it's quiet. Love it to bits.

My OB was Len Matthews who was on the expensive side but no wait times for ante-natal visits and very caring. I'm overweight but was not looked down on in any way. Not at all like a local OB was treating me at the start with DD1.

i delivered DS at the mercy in heidelberg...
couldnt fault the care i recieved, was there for a week before i went into full labour and the staff were amazing, and very compasionate to my situation.
    food was pretty crud though...

DD was born at Northpark Private in Bundoora.
i cant rave about the hospital and staff enough!
we had our own room (they guarantee it), there was loads of support, no judgement from us choosing to FF from birth, they would attend quickly when we buzzed but were very mindful to leave us alone when they didnt need to do OB's etc.
food was pretty good as well.
the special care nursery staff we fab as well! DD was admitted for 5 days due to sepsis and they kept in constant contact with us and respected our wishes when it came to us feeding her as much as possible, often holding her off for us to get to the hospital in time.

my OB was Steve Hatzikostas and i dont have a bad word to say about him!
the first few appts he seems a bit absent but once you get to know him you love him! there is no pressure to do anything (tests, scans, CS etc) he is very imformative when u ask questions, will give u his opinion but never pushes it on you, will avoid a CS where he can, same with induction....

I had both my babies at St. Vincent's Private and my Obstetrician was David O'Callaghan. I can't speak highly enough of both St. Vincent's and David. I loved my stay at the hospital (wish I could have stayed longer!), and David is gorgeous!
Happy to PM anyone who wants more info.

Another who went through David O'Callaghan at St V's and had a great experience with both David & the hospital.

I have since found out that David is a bit of a rarity in private obs in that his births and style is closer to the 'midwifery model' ie: won't insist on moving the woman to the bed to deliver (will deliver on the floor, fitball, etc) and does not follow the 'time restraints' on progress that many other obs follow - he is happy to let things go naturally for as long as possible.

As mentioned, I can't talk highly enough of my experience with David!

Also, FYI Massada has turned their Maternity ward into an extension of their Mother & Baby Unit, so no more births there.

I had my babies at South Eastern Private with a fantastic OB, Jacques Lam. No doubt a bit far for you but I thought I would mention it.

I had DD at Cabrini in April- it was amazing! I had a few issues so was going in 3-4 times a week for a month before hand and everyone was lovely. Our room was very comfy and DH was there the whole time. I really couldn't fault them.
I was booked into Masada originally, but they closed their maternity ward earlier this year.

Hi I had a friend who had her baby at the cradle last month! I see someone suggested Masada well that is no longer open (closed last December) so Len Matthews is now at the cradle! My friend was so impressed with the cradle and there was a one off fee that covered EVERYTHING!!! One bill that's it. Problem with private is that doctor's are not onsite but the cradle has a ob an anaethetist and a baby specialist all on site 24 hours a day! It's like a 5 star hotel and it's quiet and relaxing. They do all your care at one place I think my friend said even the ultrasounds were covered! The food comes from a high class restaurant too It looked incredible! It's lovely and quiet and the midwives were fantastic! I wish I had been able to have my baby there but it wasn't open yet the rooms are huge and it's all brand new! I suggest you go have a look. I'm having my next one there. Think it's about 6K out of pocket for everything. Not bad as I heard a city doctor charges 10k and that's just for him!!! Good luck hope you find what you want!

My sister had DD1 at South Eastern Private Hospital - http://www.southeasternmaternity.com.au/ - and had a wonderful experience. She had to have an emergency c-section bu they have theatre and 24 hour on-call anaesthetic and paediatric services. She got plenty of assistance and care from the maternity wing staff and she was so happy with the care they provided that she is going back for D? 2 due in May 2012.
