Default Can solids make reflux worse?

I've just had almost the worst night ever with my 5 month old. As soon as I lie him down he starts crying.

Yesterday we gave him a bit of pureed carrot to see if it would help with his silent reflux - is it a coincidence or could the solids have made things worse?

I was sooo hoping he would have outgrown his reflux by now

Big hugs to you. I don't know much about reflux but maybe his tummy is not ready for solids. Maybe you could stop for a little and then try him on farex or pear?

Thanks Flicker, you may be right. Might give it a break for a few weeks and then try again.

I just want to add, I normally believe no solids before at least 6 months but just thought starting early would be the right thing to do if it helps his reflux.

I totally feel your pain, reflux is horrible! DSs reflux got worse when we started solids and we ended up having to up his losec dose. It eventually settled a bit and we dropped him back to his initial dose at about 10 months. I hoped he would grow out of it too but at 12 months he is still needing his losec I tried weaning him off it and he reverted back to screaming constantly, not sleeping and not being able to lie down! My only advice is go really slowly with the solids and it does settle down, just takes them a while to get used to it

Oh and we held off till 6 months to give solid because of the reflux and introduced things very slowly.. Only rice cereal first then every few days trying something new. Some foods make reflux worse and this can differ between bubs so might tale you a while to figure out

my DS has reflux and he's been on solids since 4 months. We started him on the baby rice cereal once a day - we'd give him half his bottle, then some rice cereal, then the rest of his bottle and he loved it, and he's been a great eater ever since.

The only food that he had a bad reaction to - similar to your experience is apple, we tried to twice with him when he was 4 months, and have only just tried it again with him (he's nearly 8 months) he doesn't have the same reaction but he didn't eat alot of it.

If your child's reflux gets worse starting solids it's a huge indicator they have a food intolerance causing reflux. It's best to stop and consult a paed or allergist in that case as increasing the losec just masks the issue. Food intolerance can cause a lot of gut damage.

Do you know a good paed or allergist in Brisbane? I have severe food allergies & intolerances and hub has reflux. I'd really like to see someone to talk to them before I start introducing solids.

You bet it can, solids can be hard on the gut to brake down. Especially if the gut isn't ready.

Best thing you can do in regards to solids & reflux, is wait till bub is 100% ready. Don't force the issue.

Manekineko does it indicate an intolerance to the food you are introducing or to a food intolerance in general? Surely bub wouldn't have an intolerance to carrot? But he is BFed and so I've wondered if thr reflux is something in my diet. Ive cut down on dairy and I think it helped a bit.

Anyway I did not realise solids can make reflux worse. I thought they made it better. Just milk for my little man for a couple of weeks at least, I think.

    Thanks for your replies
