    Thanks for all the replies.

    My little brother nearly drowned when he was about 2 years of age. My parents always attributed it to the fact that the ****** that he fell over in was a mountain-snow run off ****** and the cold shocked him into motionlessness (thus why it was so silent and 'calm'), but having read this article...I actually think that it was because of the Instinctive Drowning Response.

    It was terrifying. So fast, and silent. This article should be read by every single person...but especially by parents and prospective parents.

    Very true. Thank you for that. We often don't know how silent it can be to drown. This is why children need to learn water safety as well as how to swim to save themselves and also why they should NEVER be allowed to swim alone before their teen years. Even then they should only be allowed if they can swim well.
