Default A Vaginal Birth after 4th Degree Tears. I DID IT!!!

I welcomed my second son into the world last night, 15th May 2011.

    May 15th, 11:30am
I started getting painless tightenings every 3min. I went about my day.

    May 15th, 3pm
I rang the hospital and asked if they were real and if i should go in to get checked out, the answer was no, it most probably wasnt real, but go in if they got worse.

    May 15th, 8pm
Pains went from a 4/10 to a 6/10 in one contraction, next contraction it was an 8/10. I pottered around the house organising my bag and things.

    May 15th, 8:30pm
I hopped into the bath, the pains were less intense in the water, it was bliss. After 2 contractions i started feeling the urge to throw up, i knew this might be asign of transition so i told DP and Mum to get the car so we could go to hospital.

    May 15th, 9:10pm
    We left for the hospital

May 15th, 9:21 (21:21 on the hall clock)
Walked into the hospital, was shown to room

    May 15th, 9:30
Had an internal, was 50%effaced and 4cm dilated. The midwife checked babys HB then left the room. I was offered Pethidine and was asked if i wanted my waters broken, i declined both and was not asked again.

I laboured quietly with my Dp and mum bymy side, i alternated from laying on my left hand side to kneeling facing the head of the bed. I sucked on the gas through every contraction.

    May 15th, 10:15pm
I was hit by the urge to bear down, i breathed through it but felt i needed to go to the toilet so we moved into the bathroom.

    May 15th, 10:30pm
I was hit by a few contractions (still every 3min apart) then my waters burst, wow what a mess! Lucky i was sitting on the toilet. I saw the colour of them and freaked, they were thick and dark green, very meconium stained. I sent mum running to get the midwife.

    May 15th, 10:45pm
She came in and we moved to the bed, the contractions started coming every minute. I knelt facing the bed head and started to bear down. She advised me to breathe my baby out. When i felt the urge to push i has to let my body do the work, i wasnt to push but i had to breathe consistently through each contraction. I could feel bubs head crown then move back up with each contraction.

Then came the hardest part, i had to stop pushing when bub was crowning, i had to let my damaged perenium stretch. My body kicked in, it knew what had to happen, just as bub crowned my contractions stopped completely, they skipped an entire minute, my baby had crowned and my perenium had stretched perfectly, no tears!!.

But as bubs head came out the midwife said "oh dear he has his hand in his mouth" as soon as his fingers came out i tore. Out slipped his head, then one arm, then the other then his body.

    S was born at 11:04pm. He weighs 9pd9.5oz, HC 37cm, L 52cm.

My labour was 3hrs from pain to baby. But on paper it was 1.5hrs, from 4cm to baby.

    After the birth.
As soon as he was out the midwife passed him between my legs and all i could do was cry. I offered him the breast but he was happy to just chill out. We let the cord stop pulsing then DP cut it. I was going for a natural 3rd stage too but started bleeding a lot so accepted the syncto.

We had skin to skin contact for 1.5hrs then he was weighed, measured and DP cuddled him while i got stitched.

I received a 2nd degree tear, which wouldnt have happened if bub had his hands down. I got 8 stitches with local. My tailbone is a bit tender because of his quick birth, but apart from that and obvious tenderness i feel fantastic.

So who said i couldnt have a successful VB after 4th degree tears???
