I don't agree that everybody should have the exact change - sure, it would make life easier EVERYWHERE if people had the exact change for every purchase they make but if you buy something and need change, it should be given for all sales.

some people are so poor, all they have is money
When I used to catch the bus the driver had this big black box type thing with change. You'd throw your money on the top and the driver would push the change through the bottom.
I, too, copped an earful for having a note but I think if you can change coins they should be able to change notes.
I've never been given any handbooks on the rules of bus travel, I'm not certain anybody has been given the legalities of what money to take on a bus lol.

I hate it when people are rude when doing their job. I cop it constantly from the local petrol station attendant when I ask for a tax reciept. She sighs and groans and does a big tanty flop its like omg love, quit your job or do it with a smile!
What happens when they are given $5 notes? They put them under the tray thing. He should have been able to give you 3 $5 notes and some change.
I was told by the driver of the bus i get on that drivers should have a till of 35$ when they start in the morning.
1x$10=$10
3x$5=$15
2x$2=$4
2x$1=$2
3x50c=$1.50
5x20c=$1
10x10c=$1
10x5c=50c
I would be peeved, i've even had a bus driver let me go on with no cash, get cashout and by the ticket when the bus stops in town.
Some times, I just dont have change for the bus. Most of the times, I have a buss ticket, but some days (when its run out) I forget and don't have correct change.
I don't know if its "the law" or not, but every bus Ive seen has a sign on it saying "please have correct fare". I understand why this is there because in peak hour in the morning when we're all trying to get to work, its bad enough having to deal with traffic but waiting as the driver fiddles with change can be infuriating for some angry passengers. Luckily, the times Ive handed over notes, I havent had any issues (although the largest note Ive used is $10) but still, during the day its not that bad and that driver could've been alot nicer to you. It's not like its done intentionally.
Completely unreasonable! I had a similar thing happen to me when I was 8months pregnant. Usually I would catch a lift in with my Mum (we worked at the same place and I lived at home at the time) but she was on a course for a week. So I had the catch the bus and than a train. As my work was 1.5hr away by public transport I had to leave at 5am to get there at 7am. So, I get up, get dressed, walk to the bus stop before dawn. It was very dark. I was the only one at the bus stop and had to wave down the bus driver. It was a Thursday and I had gone down to the shops the night before to get money out but didn't think to get it in change. I went to get on the bus (as I had done for the past 3 mornings), and hand my money over. I apologised for the $20- he refused to let me on. Saying that I could go to the train station and continue onto the depot where he would get me change, I pay $20 for the fare (which I still needed to pay for the train later that day or I could not get on. Obviously the depot idea was not going to happen as I would be late, I couldn't give him my whole $20 and I didn't have any other money so I got off. I walked back home in the dead of pre-dawn and didn't want to wake anyone up so sat outside and cried.
My Dad found me an hour later- drove me to the station before heading off to work himself. I rang work and explained (they were fine with it) and I arrived to work an hour late. I cried off and on that whole day.I rang the bus company and complained. They took down my details and later rang me back to apologise and let me know the driver had been spoken to and desciplined.
thats soo rude! most bus drivers have a multiple amount of notes either under there change draw or in there top pocket (i've caught buses for years and no matter what they've always had change). you should of just said....so less then 11 ppls have paid you in fares today that you can't even give me change for 1.80 without using notes...perhaps you should be a bit more prepared for your job in future.
btw - if i was you i'd also complain to the bus company
