Hi all, I have decided to stay on Metformin for the first trimester. I have been taking 1000mg a day (one 500mg tablet in morning, one at night). Is this a similar level to what everyone else is on?
    Thanks!!

Yep! That's what I was on. Depending on which chemist I got it from sometimes I took Diaformin (same thing, different brand-name). I didn't notice any changes when I stopped taking it. I stacked on 25kg by the end of the pregnancy though so I sometimes wonder if the Met was keeping it under control til I stopped taking it. I found when I was on it I didn't crave sugar then afterwards I pigged out. Next time I'll be good and eat healthy

Also my friend who also has PCOS took Met for her first trimester and had a successful pregnancy.

    Default Metformin side effects

    Hi
Has anyone who is on or has been on Metformin experienced any hairloss? I have just started on it and I am worried about this side effect that I have read about on the Internet.

my wife has some hairloss and is on metformin... but she's also got very thick hair, so its not a huge issue. Not 100% sure its from metformin because she's been on other drugs for pregnancy/fertility.

I'm on 500mg a day of Metformin (+ Clomid) for PCOS, and the FS said to stop taking it when I get a positive test, but he said it doesn't matter if I accidentally take it for a few days 'over' that period.

I asked why I was on the Metformin, as I don't have diabetes or weight problems, and he said that it was really an extra thing to try to help, and that 50% of the research says it makes no difference, and the other 50% says it helps. He said there was no harm in it, so I may as well take it, but (in his words) he was 'not fussed' if I didn't want to take it.

So... I'm taking it and seeing what happens. No hairloss yet! Hadn't heard of that one - hope that doesn't happen!

My GP said it was a drug that hadn't been classified as safe for pregnancy. However, the FS said that while that's true, no negative effects (of taking it in pregnancy) have been found, and that many women with severe PCOS or diabetes take it.

So I think that's why there may be some ambivalence about it from the different doctors. It hasn't been proven 'safe' but there have been no negatives found for it either.

Hi desperatetobeamum, as you would have seen in the thread i was on metformin for many months prior TTC, and stayed on it until the 13th or 14th week of pregnancy when i weaned myself off...I never had issues with hairloss, or actually any other issues with it whatsoever. I have really fine hair so it worried me a bit but didn't happen!
Also, as soon as I started on it my fertility treatments improved success so even if I would have had hair loss etc I would have probably stayed on it!! Good luck with TTC

Girl X - I was in exactly the same boat as you, no diabetes or weight issues, they actually couldn't explain why metformin worked but it did...I rang loads of helplines , spoke with lots of Drs and pharmacists about metformin in pregnancy. I had a range of answers from "come off immediately" to "its no harm". Majority of responses were along the lines of "it not helping you anymore as you are already pregnant so come off". I trusted my gut in the end and stayed on until the end of the first trimester, due to some of the research showing improved ongoing pregnancy rates for people with PCOS...I did tell my Obstetrician I had decided to stay on it and he was OK, just said I can't stay on it for the whole pregnancy..I was worried as it seemed to help so much (2 rounds of clomid didn't work, 3rd round with metformin was 'textbook') could have been a coincidence but it seemed strange..I thought it must be doing something positive and was so scared to stop taking it after the first trimester!!

I had 6 miscarriages (I have PCOS) before Metformin and once I started Metformin I successfully gave birth! I stayed on the Met all throughout the pregnancy and all throughout my 3 years plus of breastfeeding - I never came off it and am now on my second pregnancy. I plan to stay on Metformin after birth and during breastfeeding again. I love it and under specialist endocrinologist/fertility specialist care and convinced it stopped me from miscarrying. It's also (I've heard just recently) supposed to help your milk supply.
