It has taken a couple of days to get back into the swing of things but so far everything seems to be heading in the right direction but we are not counting our chickens before their hatched. Our little one is now in a rhino cruiser and she seems to be tollerating it well without the problems of the pavlik and lt looks like there has been no perminant nerve damage thank god. Time will tell how this all goes, we cant speak highly enough of the Sydney Childrens Hospital at Ranwick they have been wonderful, and a special thankyou to you Mrs Molly Coddle your support has been just wonderful and I hope you and your family are all going well.I will update in a few days on her progress but so far so good

Hi Everyone, my beautiful little 8 week old girl was fitted with a pavlik harness today. I am lucky that they have found the problem and it isn't too severe, but watching her cry when she can't stretch is heartbreaking. I also miss the closeness when I feed her.

Thank you all so much for all of your comments - no doubt lots of your tips will come in handy over the coming weeks. It's reassuring to see you have all gotten through this - it helps to know we will too xx

Oh Nikki my heart breaks for you I remember that so well and it is awful. Even though you know it could be much worse, don't feel that you can't be sad for your daughter. You have every right to be.
I hope your beautiful DD settles in to her new position happily very soon. PM me any time if you want to talk/vent/whatever. I'm so sorry for you guys. You will get through this, yes indeed! Xxx

hi just wanted to know does anyone know the difference between a pavlik harness and a dennis brown bar (DBB)

both my DD's have the same hip condition yet different harness for treatment the DBB being the much better option for comfort and ease of looking after her

when I asked at the Royal Childrens in Melb they said that the pavlik harness where not used any more and old and horrible thing to have a baby in when DBB was better does anyone else have any other information

    Hi ohdear,

The Pavlik harness is used in newborns and is still mostly definitely used. My DD3 was borderline and going to be fitted for one. Thank goodness she has been given the all clear. A dennis brown brace/bar is used in older babies ie 6 months and older usually. If it's picked up early, like at the 6 week check, babies usually only require 12 weeks in the Pavlik. My DD2 was not picked up until 6 months and she was operated on, in a spica cast and then in a dennis brown for a year (comprising 23hrs/day and then last few months of a night only)

I maybe would be getting a second opinion. Our paed surgeon is Head of Orthopaedics at a Childrens Hopsital and one of his specialty is hips.

Goodluck with your child. Just know that it is so hard when you start out, but please believe that it does get easier and you will all adjust. My DD2 amazed us, she just coped with whatever they threw at her.

    Many thoughts your way!

    xx

DD2 is now 18mths and perfectly fine

both DD's where picked up at birth yet DD2 was in a DBB before 6 weeks of age
from my experience it depends on what ortho you get and their preference as both DD's where seen at the Royal Children's in Melb again both with specialists

I would go with the DBB same results with the horrid pavlik, second opinion is something I would advise all having one fitted
