Default How many cycles did it take to achieve BFP once diagnosed with high nk cells?

    Hi Ladies,

I'm searching for some sort of reassurance, I guess, at the moment. I had another failed FET so only 1 left now and I'm feeling really anxious and defeated.

I was diagnosed with high natural killer cells so I went on the 'Bondi Protocol' Dr. Gavin Sack's term for the prednisolone & clexane treatment. - It didn't work.

I was wondering if anyone has been on the treatment and how many cycles it took to fall pregnant? Did your FS increase the meds for the next cycle or add anything different to the mix?

Today I'm really hurting, but I'm sure I'll be more positive in a few days.

    Hi Helen,

I got a BFP on my first cycle after being diagnosed with high NK cells. Unfortunately we miscarried at 9 weeks due to trisomy 15. 2nd cycle - BFN, 3rd cycle - chemical pregnancy, 4th cycle - BFN, 5th cycle - BFP, now 20 weeks. The 3 cycles I had before diagnosis I had a BFN and 2 chemical pregnancies.

I was treated slightly different to you. I was put on antibiotics, prednisolone and aspirin. The 3 cycles after diagnosis I was on 15mg prednisolone but for 4th & 5th I was increased to 30mg pred. I was told by my FS only he and Gavin Sacks will prescribe a 30mg dose for NK cells, most other FS won't go that high.

I was also diagnosed with a couple of other things so had more meds to take. My successful cycle I was on:-

Augmentin (antibiotic) - 5 days from CD 1
    Aspirin - CD1
    Prednisolone - CD7
Clexane - from day of ET

I was also taking Mega folate, mega B, elevit and I-folic.

I requested the clexane on my last cycle. My FS was happy to prescibe it to me even though he didn't think it would make much of a difference but he knew it was our last ever cycle & I wanted to throw everything at it.

I really hope you are successful on your next cycle

helenmac, sorry to hear about your BFN. I know how it feels. I was diagnosed with high NK Cells in Dec and just recently did a stim cycle with 20mg Prednisolone from CD1 and baby aspirin. I just got a BFN aswell.
My nurse said to try again with the pred and aspirin with my frozen embies but I really want a second opinion, I don't want to waste them.

Can I ask if Dr Sacks uses Intralipids?
Has he tested you for Thyroid or any other issues?

I am in Melb but am thinking of going to see him in Sydney because I heard he knew a bit about immune issues with IVF.

hoping4asticky1 - can I ask who your FS is? did he test you for other issues aswell, like thyroid or anything else?
Do you think it was the clexane that helped this time?
Sorry for all the questions but I'm also searching for answers as to why its not working for me.

    Thanks.

sorry to those with BFNS as I know all too well how it feels when you think you are FINALLY on the right track and the right meds and it fails. I tried Clexane and had two BFNs whilst on it but I have to say, I had not covered all bases. I was with someone else and have just moved over to a new doctor. I was told that some embryos will just not stick no matter the protocol and have been offered testing on my embryos. It is quite expensive and there is no rebate but they can test to see if the embryos are viable or not. I have only two frosties left and I have the choice of testing them or doing a fresh cycle and testing any subsequent embryos. I am a little torn. I am nonetheless pleased as my previous doctor refused to do this. I think sometimes a second opinion can put our minds at ease.

    Best of luck XXX

I went to see Dr Sacks after 19 failed cycles of IVF and was tested for Nk cells and they were elevated. Was put on the Bondi protocol, we did a stim cycle which was a BFN, 2nd cycle we had a chemical pregnancy and the third cycle was more than sucessful, we had 2 embryo's put in and got triplets! I am currently 22+5 weeks pregnant. I am so glad we went to Dr Sacks, we would never have been in our current position without him and his expertise!
Good luck, I hope it works for you very soon, Nic.

    Hi Ladies

I am on currently on cycle number 21 and have also just been diagnosed with NKC. So this cycle is the first cycle that I will be treated for NKC. Hopefully it will make a difference.

To treat NKC my doc has added the following to my cocktail of meds:

Intralipid IV which is administered 7 - 14 days before transfer. I will need to be booked into hospital as a day patient and this is administered over a couple of hours via a drip.
    Dexamethasone

I am so hoping that this treatment is going to make the difference for us

I am also taking Luveris, Augmentin, Clexane , baby Asprin, prog pessaries, Estradot pathces along with the normal synarel and Puregon 450.

    Guess time with tell

I was tested for NK cells after our 6th failed cycle I did a 7th before we got the results then found out they were elevated. Cycle 8 was prednisone and BFN cycle 9 was prednisone & cartia and I now have a 5 week old baby

My first FS wouldn't do any testing so I changed clinics, scary to think I would probably still be transferring if I didn't move.

    Good luck to those waiting

I was diagnosed with high NKC prior to my last cycle. My FS is treating me with intralipid infusions prior to (and again after BFP if successful which it wasn't), and dexamethasone tablets which are a very high level of cortisone (which I had to be weaned off due to their strength). I also had asprin, etc as part of the colorado protocol and clexane for Factor V. This is apparently the treatment being trialled in England as part of the recently advertised treatment for recurrent miscarrages.

Mousse - I am in Melbourne so if you are interested I can give you the details of my FS.

I was diagnosed with high NK cells following a biopsy which I had after BFN #2 during my first stim cycle. I then had 3 failed transfers and 2 failed IUIs (one following a cancelled stim cycle) until finally getting a BFP from a fresh transfer during my 3rd stim cycle. I take 20mg Prednisolone and Cartia, and in terms of natural supplements which are claimed to assist with NK cell issues, I take 2 Fish Oil capsules daily, CoQ10 and Zinc tablets (on top of the usual Pregnancy multivitamin). Good luck - I think it just takes longer for some of us to get the right mix of drugs and/or alternative therapies to overcome these immune issues, but there are a number of different protocols around that can help (as you can see from the great posts here). Hang in there - there is more research coming out every day about these issues, and think of what a FANTASTIC immune system we will pass on to our babies!
