The Bubhub Photography Course starts on Sunday the 27th of March.
It is a 10 week online course written by a US photographer Jodie Coston. The course we are following is here on Morguefile.
When and where?
Each week starting on Sunday a new lesson will begin in a new thread here on Bubhub. Each lesson has accompanying assignments. The assignments will be due by the Monday just over a week later, with images to be posted (if you wish!) in the same thread.
It is designed for anyone who wants to learn more about photography and how to get the results they want.
It is suitable for the absolute beginner, though you may need to get familiar with your camera manual
What do I need?
You can use any type of camera, including a phone, but the course is designed for those with a digital SLR camera or advanced camera where settings can be controlled. Some assignments do require a camera that settings can be manually controlled, but we will include an adaptation of those assignments to suit those with simpler compact cameras and phones as well.
Scroll down to see the lesson timeline and which lessons will be adapted.
You can check out the first lesson here to see what it's like: Composition And Impact - It's A Beautiful Photograph, But Do You Know WHY It's Beautiful?
Assignments? What the?
Each weekly lesson has an assignment at the end. Your assignment (ie. images posted to the thread) is due one week later on the Monday.
Assignments are anything from fairly specific: "Take a landscape photograph using 1/60th shutter speed", to "Take a portrait using some of the techniques discussed in the lesson".
You need to take your photo/s (usually between one and five photos depending on the assignment) and post them to the lesson thread here on Bubhub by the due date.
How much time will this take?
The course is 10 weeks, and it is recommended you devote around three hours per week.
- One hour to read through the lesson online, perhaps with camera in help understand any new concepts
- One hour (spread out over the week perhaps) to take your assignment photos
- One hour to load your photos onto the computer, and then to Bubhub, and of course participate in any discussion happening in the thread
If you don't have that much time available, but would still like to do it, you can manage it in less time.
If you fall behind, you can catch up, still post your assignments in the relevant thread (even a few new threads for later lessons have already started) and catch up when you can. Do try to complete them on time if you can though!
Lesson One - Composition
Lesson Two - Aperture and shutter speed - how they work together This lesson requires a camera with which you can manually change shutter speed and aperture.
Lesson Three - The lens - choosing camera optics This lesson requires you to have a camera that can zoom in and out.
Lesson Four - ISO, Grain, Transparency vs. Negative, Specialty Film This lesson is relevant for everyone to read though, however the assignment relates to shooting film. We can easily adapt the assignment to something that uses the lesson but is relevant to digital shooting.
Lesson Five - Fun Effects - Camera Filters, Soft Focus, Zooming And Panning 1/3 of the assignments for this lesson require a camera that can zoom in and out.
Lesson Six - Landscape, Nature and Travel Photography
Lesson Seven - Portraits And Studio Lighting
Lesson Eight - Studio Lighting - Still Life and Product Photography
Lesson Nine - Tying It All Together
Lesson Ten - Special Requests
We have quite a few talented and knowledgable photographers here on Bubhub, so help will be available if you need!
See you in the thread: "Lesson One - Composition" on Sunday!
