Default Those that have got rid of the dummy...

    Hi all,

Just wondering if you had a bubs that had a dummy but you got rid of it...did that make bubs sleep any better?

My bubs (5mo) pretty much self settles now, but sometimes when going to sleep..he mucks around for a bit and grabs the dummy, pulls it out and throws it away...then of course he screams! But I go in replace and repeat and he will go to sleep. Sometimes he goes to sleep straight away. He also wakes during the night and I have to go in and replace it..but sometimes it takes him ages to go back to sleep. I am just SO tired and I hated that I gave him a dummy in the first place. I cried when I did it thinking I will probably have to get up all night to replace the dummy...which I do a bit

So I am wondering if I somehow get rid of the dummy...I know it will be tough for a few nights, but if it will make his sleeping better at night.

Just wondering if you have been through this?

    Thanks all!

My DS is 5 months as well and does the same thing so I'm interested to see what other people have done as well.

I got rid of my DS dummy at 8 mths because he started waking for it when it fell out. It only took his two day sleeps and by the night sleep he didn't cry for it. I know I was lucky that it was so easy to get rid of.
Just bite the bullet and start on their first sleep of the day. Also u need to replace the dummy with another comforter either a toy or a small blanket. My DS switched to a stuffed monkey who he still cuddles at night.
My issue is I have a 4yr old with ASD who still has a dummy for sleep at night, I'm too tired to go through the many nights of crying to get rid of it any other suggestions wouldn't great!

Both my girls had dummy's until about 14 months. We had the same prob as you around 5 months and tried to get rid of their dummy's but found they still needed them. ( I had always felt bad that as I couldn't bf them they didn't they comfort sucking time that bf babies do so they got to keep their dummy's) we instead taught them to find and replace thief dummy by each time they lost it we guided their hand to it then helped them put it in themselfs. At 12 months they came off bottles and so we tried the dummy dd1 just gave it up straight away dd2 took till 14 months. We just remove the dummy when their fast asleep and if they stay asleep the rest of the night we know they can go without it.

    Thanks Frangi and MumofbigT!

I bit the bullet last night and went cold turkey. Resulted in a 5hr sleep from 12.30am to 5.30am, which is the longest block of sleep he has had past midnight...well...maybe ever??!! Just need to work on that 5.30am wake up now.

Yes, actually the nurse at Ngala said I can teach him to put the dummy in himself, and sometimes he would grab it, but then always try and put the wrong end in his mouth. Other times he would just lay there and scream!

Oh he also already had another comforter (one of my tshirts) so I didnt know what else to give him??
