    Default 36 week scan

    Hi all,

I just wanted to know if it was normal to receive a 36 week scan? I have seen quite a few people on here mention it, but I am not booked in for one. Is it a high risk / private patient only type thing or should I be mentioning it to my obs next week? I was 36 weeks yesterday. Thanks for taking the time to help out a naive 1st timer!

No it's not normal. It's only for high risk patients. Sometimes the hospital will do a quick scan very late in pregnancy if the baby isn't laying correctly. And for twins they do mire regular scans.
If you have had a normal uncomplicated pregnancy I wouldnt worry at all!

I had one with both my girls.
DD1 was because they wanted to check the location of the placenta because it was low.
DD2 was again to check the location of the placenta, this time because it was right in the area they would be cutting me for my c/s

It is not a 'normal' scan but can be pretty common so that is probably why you have come across a few people having one.

I had my 36 week scan yesterday- it was a growth scan to check on my twins. I wouldn't be concerned about not having one- I am classed a high risk so have a lot of monitoring.

it's not ONLY for high-risk women, my obgyn offered me one for 'fetal growth' which he offers all his girls, of course it is optional. I personally think it's great - even if bubs is perfectly healthy!!
