Im in early stages of Emailing my IP.. So its exciting and Overwhelming trying to Take in as much info as possible.. Both the IP and myself are new to all this.. So we're learning together as we go :-) I've read a few threads containing bits and pieces on the process, how Surrogacy works, what states Surrogacy is Legalized in etc.. So I will Share the Research I have done over the last few days.. Spending hours upon hours googling and making phone calls to Vic Nsw & Qld.. This is the following Information & Steps to take for both the IP and Surrogate..

IVF Australia:- Will only facilitate Surrogacy in the Following situations - The IP (Intended Parent) Must have a defined medical disorder that makes it either impossible or unacceptably dangerous for a Baby to be carried in the Uterus. IVF Australia does not offer Surrogacy for Couples where the problem is solely that IVF has been repeatedly unsuccessful or that there have been repeated miscarriages of unknown cause..

The Gestational Surrogate must fulfil All of the Following Criteria:- Her age Must be greater than 25 yrs and less than the age of the natural menopause (less than 52 yrs) The only Exception to this will be the Unique circumstance whereby the Gestational Carrier is carrying a child on behalf of her Daughter or Daughter In-Law. In this Circumstance is a Maximum age of less than 55 yrs will Apply.. She must have given Birth to a Baby, which has become a Healthy Child. She must not have a Past history of Pregnancy Exacerbated Illness or Pregnancy complications or have a current illness that is likely to be exacerbated by Pregnancy. She must have an Established Relationship with the IP for a Period of 2 yrs by the time of the Embryo Transfer (depends on the state, as QLD requires a minimum of one yr by the time of transfer)

Neither the IP or Surrogate can suffer from a significant psychiatric disorder that would impair the decision making around the Surrogacy process. Including at the time of Birth or impair the ability of the commissioning parents to care for the Child. The Gestational Carrier must not use her own Oocytes (eggs) although a third party donor is permissible. IVF Australia and other Fertility clinics Will Not proceed with Treatment unless all of the above criteria are fulfilled.

Pls Note:- That while you will be kept informed about your likely suitability. you still need to be aware that if they (IVF/Fertility clinic) receive a report that suggests the Surrogacy is not the right treatment for you. The Ethics committee may not be prepared to approve you in proceeding with the Surrogacy procedure.

The Process:- A medical consultation with the IP's and the proposed Surrogate (partner if any) is the first step. During this consultation the Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) and medical treatment required for the particular Surrogacy situation will be explained. Counselling for the IP and Surrogate/Partner is undertaken where Implications regarding their decision and genetic issues will be discussed. The IP and Surrogate/Partner may be required to have Independent Psychiatric Obstetric Assessments. The IP & Surrogate/Partner must each obtain legal advice from a Solicitor/Barrister (Ur Fertility Clinic can help with Referring for this Process) You will need to provide a written certificate confirming that ur Lawyer has advised all parties on their legal rights, obligations & implications for any child/children arising from the Surrogacy arrangement.

All relevant information will be submitted to the Ethics Committee for final approval. After approval, if the IP is using her own eggs she will undergo an IVF Treatment Cycle whereby her Ovaries are stimulated and her eggs are collected in day surgery and fertilized with her partners sperm. The embryo created will be then inseminated into the surrogate. I do know there is a 3 month cooling off period somewhere along the procedure but not sure when!! Hope this helps

So far i've found a few helpful clinics that already have or in the process of a Surrogacy Program. But not all IVF or Fertility Clinics support Surrogacy as yet. QLD - QFG "QLD Fertility Group that have a few good locations in Brisbane. Vic - Monash IVF also good locations. Im yet to seek more info from other states on their Surrogacy Programs.

It is Illegal to accept payment, gifts or any financial gain in being a Surrogate and Egg Donor.. However the IP's are legally bound to pay for any costs relating to the Procedure i.e. Travel costs, medication during the pregnancy, time off work to attend your appointments, day care fees or babysitter costs also while attending appointments. You should not be out of pocket for anything relating to the procedure. I guess be as honest and open with ur IP's from the beginning so that there is no problems/issues arise during or after the procedure is done! Its honestly unjust to charge thousands of dollars for those unfortunate couples needing help to have a Child.
