    I remember when she told me, I responded with, "ahhh, that would be fatal." She then explained that it was a symptom of septicemic plague, which was the rarest of the three plagues involved in the "black death" because it tended to kill victims before they could spread it. I was reminded of this recently when I read in a newspaper, a few months ago, that septicemic plague had broken out in one country. The article said that there were cases all over the country. I thought that sounded rather scary and worried about risk of it spreading further. But I never discovered any later information on it, so hope they got the outbreak under control.
