DS has a temp of 39.5 & has been really sleepy this afternoon. He just fell asleep during dinner & wouldn't eat. I've had a sore throat all week, maybe he's caught that from me. Should I take him to the hospital? (the GP is shut until morning)

Yep. Take him to the hospital. Or call 13 health. But I would probably just go to the hospital.

I guess it really depends on the age of your child. If they are less than 6 months old yes indeed I would take him to the hospital. If he is older I think you need to allow the temperature to do its job. 39.5 is no longer considered a high temperatureJust keep an eye on it, keep him hydrated and comfortable.

Thanks for that link missie mack, it does say though that if he has a fever and he is drowsy or very sleepy then he does need to see a dr.
I would call falling asleep during dinner very drowsy or sleepy.

Yup, get to see someone.
A temperature is ok if they are other wise well, but being drowsy I would get him checked.
Better to be safe.

39.5 IS a high temperature, coupled with the fact he is sleepy and wont eat says to me he is unwell. I would get him seen by a Dr - it's up to you if you take him to hospital or not, but I'd certainly get him looked at. Paracetamol will help with the temperature if you are worried too.

Hi ladies, thanks fo the replys.
We did take DS to the hospital (I forgot to mention he's 15 months old) just to be cautious. It was a bit or an ordeal for DS as he had to have blood tests, appaently its standard procedure now if they are under 18 months. It's to rule out meningitis & bacterial infection. Anyway, 6 hours & lots of crying later he was discharged with a viral infection (probably caught from me) His temp peaked at 40 in the end!!
He's alot better today now.![]()
