    Default Rapid increasing head circumference......

    Hi,

I would like a bit of advice from you all particularly those who have been in a similar situation.

I have 4 month old twins and went to get them weighed/measured yesterday and my youngest twin's head circumference has grown from 39cm at 10w to 43.5 at 18w which plotted a rapid increase on the chart, therefore alerting the GP to a possible problem. We have been referred to a paed in January for further investigation, but she mentionned a possibility of fluid on the brain which naturally has freaked us out.

To look at him, he doesn't have a big head at all so I am a little confused. My oldest twin only measured 42cm but his head looks much bigger. They were both born premature at 36w and my youngest has always been the smaller one and at 4m old he still doesn't have full head control and can't lift his head up when lying on his front.

Has anyone been through a similar situation and had a positive outcome or can anyone give a little advice on what could be going on. I know babies grow at different rates and I am just hoping that he is taking a little longer to do things, although it doesn't explain the rapid increase of his head.

    Any advice welcome....

We had similar with my ds who is now 11 months ...

His line seriously goes straight up on the chart and his circumference is now off the charts ...

First paed we saw thought he was starving and his brain was getting all the nutrients... Eek!

Second paed was a bit more realistic and after asking me about his feeding and nappies etc thought it could be fluid on the brain.

We had to have an ultrasound to check for fluid on the brain.

Thankfully it was all clear. I have since found out from my mum that when I was little she went through the same thing with me. We just have big heads ...

Try not to worry too much. Ask your gp for a referral for an ultrasound before you go to the paed.
