Default Olive- friends baby Olivia- too similar?

    Hi all,

So we think we have decided on our girls name- Olive.

We really really love it and picked it out a while ago.

However we just moved to another
City and our only for friends here (long term friends of DP) have an 18month old lovely daughter called Olivia.

Do you think they are just far too similar? I know they are different names but they are almost the same.

I am even scared to tell them it's the name we have chosen as it looks like we copied.

Like I said, they are the only people we know here and they are so lovely, we are bound to be spending a bit of time with them. Such a pickle!

Oh and the nickname we want to use is olly - and they call her olly!

If this baby is a boy it will save me from all of this haha.

    Thanks for your help!

Olive and Olivia may look similar, but they are both pronounced very different.
I think they are both beautiful. And I say go for it.

I think they are too similiar. the first 4 letters are the same and pronounced the same. What is it you love about olive. Think about it, weither it is the meaning or what ever and then look at names that are similiar.

depends how they pronounce olivia.. most people say it with the A sound.
say olive and olivia out loud, yeah too similar for sisters but definitely not for friends!

honestly though it theyre friends i would just say 'we've decided on a name, its Olive, what do you think as im now wondering if its too similar to olivia'.
and if theyre real friends they wont care!!!

    Thanks guys!

I think we will bring it up, once we know if it is even a girl.

We just love the name so much, I wouldn't want to regret not using it. But I also don't want to irritate our friends.

The name means olive - derived from olive tree so it might be hard to find another with the same meaning haha. But I get what you mean - we put it in nymbler and there are others that we like but this is still top of the list. We just can't shake it!

Thanks so much for your opinions!

I think they look similar but sound different and have a very different 'feel' to them.

I happen to love both - and also love oliver for a boy!

Love love love Olive! So adorable.

ohhh hard one ... they are so similar, yet different as others have said a completely different feel.

Do your friends have a nickname for her like Livy ? if so Livy and Olly are completely different ... that might help

Yep ... you are just going to bite the bullet and ask them, best to give them some warning if you are set on the name so that they can come around, and as you said it could well be a boy. They will get over it - people don't own names

    ps Love Olive
