Default Any lawyers out there? How can I get what is owed to me?

Basically, I did a gig for a Church and was promised a fee of $300 towards accommodation and $250 for performing. It was promised by the director of music working there at the time and as yet, nothing has been paid despite me sending an invoice to both the DOM and now the parish. The performance was in October. I received an email from the parish today saying that they would send me a cheque for $150

I just want to know what my rights are and how I can go about getting the money that is owed to me. I have an email trail which I just forwarded to the parish so they can see what was promised to me but if this does not make any difference, what is the next step?

    Thanks in advance

not sure what state you are in but in victoria at least there is a small claims tribunal at VCAT which has a very small (if anything) filing fee to lodge an application (like $20) and it is set up to be dealt with without the use of lawyers.
they can make an order for payment then if it is not complied with you file the order at the magistrates court for enforcement.
it is a very straightforward process.

Far out. I'm an active Christian church member and i would be shocked and disgusted if our church behaved that way!

    Good luck!

Thanks everyone, I'm in NSW but this happened in the ACT.

I am a bit shocked too and very upset. I do this sort of stuff all the time and have never had a problem. I'm starting to think the church just didn't know what this DOM was promising. I don't know, it's all just very strange and upsetting.
