    Question Rentals in Darwin

    Hi!
We may be moving to Darwin soon, so have been trying to check out what house rentals are available. Can anyone point me in the right direction of websites that has this? I am looking for a house rather than a unit or apartment, but going by websites I've looked at so far, houses are scarce?
    Thanks!

Hi Blackcat, i relocated from Darwin in february after living there for 13years so might help a bit.

It really does depend on where you are searching as to what will come up. realestate.com is probably the best website to do all your searching.

If you are searching 'Darwin' only as the suburb then you are very unlikely to get any house results. The suburbs surrounding Darwin (likely to come up: Stuart Park, Larrakeyah, Fannie Bay) will probably only bring apartment/unit results also. There are some housing within these suburbs but are very expensive and I doubt on the market for very long.

So it depends on what area you are relocating to. I lived in Palmerston, which is a satellite city to Darwin. Its 20kms into the city (about an 18min drive, maybe 25 in the morning peak hour and night time peak hour). Palmerston is mainly housing, and is also popular with defence housing as it is close to the army base up there. In general houses in Palmerston are newer than what you will find in the 'darwin' area. If you wanted to look at northern suburbs of Darwin (closer to the airport) you would look at: Anula, Alawa, Wanguri, Wulagi, Leanyer, Nightcliff (there are more than these thats just a few) these are older suburbs of Darwin.

It will also very much depend on your budget. Rentals in Darwin/Palmerston are sought after and I would say that average rental for a house is about $450 - $500 (if not more). We rented for 2 years in quite a nice house, three bedrooms, two bathrooms pool in a decent suburb (Gunn, in Palmerston) that went up to $550 after we left in 2009 - whilst the house was nice it wasnt a luxury home in any way.

I guess it will come down to what you want to be near, your budget and what you are looking for in a house (oh I guess schools might also be a factor if you have odler kids?), and work locations?

    Hope this helped!

Thanks for your replies. HUGE help Krsyd!
We live 2 and half hours away from Darwin at the moment, and go to Darwin once a fortnight for shopping, so we know a bit of the area. I knew rentals were dear, but not quite THAT expensive. Palmerston might be the place to go then. DH's work will be based at Darwin but lots of travelling. School isnt necessary, only daycare. Thanks again!

Not a problem! sorry I probably included too much and really obvious information for you if you only live 2.5hours away!!!

I have always lived in Palmerston in the 13years living up there, and both DH and I worked in Darwin (i moved out to a job in palmerston for the last two years which was great but whilst living in palmerston and working in the city it didnt bother either of us driving in every day.

We both miss Darwin and cant wait to get back (I looked at some rentals recently in Palmerston for 3 bedroom houses and there was a couple for $410 - one was in Driver). I am counting down to my holiday up there in Dec/Jan!
