Default Funny response to vegetarian meal option

I thought this was a bit funny and bizarre- I just rsvp'd to DP's work christmas function via email (he asked me to) and I mentioned I was vegetarian. The girl wrote back "Sure, we have two vegetarian meal options, grilled fish or vegetable kebabs".

Er, last I checked fish is not vegetarian lol. I know some people don't eat meat and just eat fish but I'm pretty sure that's called something else...pescetarian or something?? Why do people expect vegetarians must eat fish, or even chicken? They are clearly animals too!

I bit my tongue and just wrote back "Vegetable kebabs thank you" but I so wanted to say something!

I'm a recent vego so I guess this is just the start for me of people saying or doing silly things like that

I also need to formulate a witty response for when friends and family find out I'm veg now and make the usual comments "But what will you eat??", "Humans are MEANT to eat meat you know!!"... So far I've mainly had "WHY would you want to do that??" to which I replied for ethical reasons etc etc.

I'm feeling very much put into a 'box' at this point which is frustrating because this decision has really made me feel more alive and more like 'me', I'm so much more educated of food, nutrition and where my food comes from. It's a good feeling

I'm no longer a vego but I used to find it easier to ignore stupid, ignorant comments. I used to be a vegan for many years and felt so... alive! Wheras when I eat meat (like now) I feel sluggish, bloated, lethargic, constipated LOL yet people won't accept that it could possibly make people feel good

I also have terrible problems absorbing iron when I eat meat!!

You'll just never 'win' that one, people should learn to live and let live. My dad gave up drinking wine a long time ago and even had friends tell him how "bad" it is for him because experts supposedly encourage drinking red wine

People get very defensive when they have to think about their own diets as, seriously, why would someone else's diet bother them? It doesn't affect them in any way, shape or form!

I get asked if I eat fish as if they just can't believe it. I have heard the Q too - So what do you eat? Strange.

it's because a lot of people claim to be vegetarian but still eat white meat.

It is actually just keeping up with what is done socially...not them being stupid or trying to insult you.

I was a vegetarian for about 5 years (came to a crashing halt when i got pregnant lol) and i often got offered the fish or chicken option...no big deal, just said no.

My issue was that i don't eat cheese or very much dairy (not vegan, just don't like it) and so often all they have for vege's is bloody lasagne!!

I know, I didn't take it to heart just thought it was funny!

The cheese thing is a bit of an issue for me too, because I have vegetarian cheese at home but when eating out I'm sure even the vege options would have normal cheese made with rennet. However since I'm still new to this I would still eat normal cheese when out, unfortunately it's just a lot easier.

I am trying to limit dairy and eggs and much as I can too though, not sure if I could actually go vegan but I would like to come close

I agree with Smiley i know someone thats a vegan but still eats seafood. I suppose it can be confusing for those that arent aware of the different types of vegos. As frustrating as it can be to get the same silly remarks all the time, i really respect those that are vego.

Oh gosh even labelling themselves as a vegetarian would be irritating but a vegan?

There are 3 types of vego, none of which eat any meat or seafood at all.

lacto vegetarian- consumes dairy but no meat or eggs
ovo vegetarian- consumes eggs but no meat or dairy
lacto ovo- consumes both dairy and eggs but no meat.

The most common is lacto ovo as far as I'm aware?

Then there is vegan which is no animal products or byproducts at all.

I don't know, I'm not one to get uppity about it too much, I guess there are a lot of misconceptions out there. Personally though I would never label myself vegetarian but still eat fish or whatever. I would just say I don't eat red meat.

Haha my friend is 'some sort' of
Vegetarian and hr said he always gets offered the chicken dish

I'm a meat addict but I totally am fine with people not wanting to eat meat.... I don't understand the no dairy part tho.... All I ask is they don't expect me to make them a specific meal if they come over for dinner!!
