    Default Middle names?

I have a question... Why are middle names so important? I don't have one... no-one in my family has one.

Just want to know... is it unusual to NOT give your child a middle name? Just picking one name is hard enough.

And we are not likely to use any of our parents/grandparents names...

I don't have one and the family don't have one. I rekon they are a hassle I couldn't handle 3 or 4 names mines long enough!

In my family, it is customary to give the mothers maiden name as a middle name. It's a way of keeping the name going.

i see them as being a good way of remembering important family members, family names etc. i often wonder why people give their kids middle names if it's not for that purpose. not judge, just wonder.
but no, they're certainly not 'essential'.

DS doesn't have a middle name, neither does his dad or grandfather, so we're keeping up that tradition on my ex's side.

I don't think they're important, it's just a name used in forms occasionally. I get that they are used to keep family names going and all that, but they seem pretty superfluous to me.

They're not essential. My dad and my uncles don't have one. Mum and dad gave my brother and I a middle name though. I love middle names. My kids will have middle names. DH has two middle names lol.
