Gaining Custody/Guardianship of ex's child

Hey, I have a friend who met this guy a while back who had a young son. My friend and this guy had a child together and then she left him because he had serious alcohol, drug and anger problems. She took his son with her (the one from his prior relationship) and raises him as her own, and his dad has him every second weekend. This has been going on for almost two years.he doesnt provide her with any financial support. I was wondering if anyone knows how she could gain legal guardianship of his son and be eligable for family assisstance and child support?

Take him to court or get both of the bubs parents to sign the paperwork.

Depending on what state your in, there should be a 'step parent' resource centre who will have all the info your friend needs.
