Sausages are $7 for 24, that's 8 meat and veg worth for ds and I,
All I claimed that I thought could be done is using healthier meat options like mince. That's all.

$7 for 24 sausages sounds wayyy to cheap to me and s compromise on quality

I'm actually buying sausages tomorrow. I'll tell you how much it costs and how many.

Proudmma you haven't read the whole thread if you are asking those questions. There have been some great recipe ideas put into this. It's about full bellies not premium bellies.

Proudmamma I think you entirely missed the point of the op. Its not about providing the most nutritious meals, its about being able to provide a meal for your family instead of going hungry. You turn your nose up at $7 sausages but I'm sure if your choices were your children go hungry or you buy those sausages you'd be first in line at coles.

Hey ladies. Just wanted to share a recipe that I make often thats very cheap and my very fussy toddler loves. (And dh is mmad for it)

    Savoury mince and rice.

500g mince (I normally do 2 kg of mince cos I freeze and it lasts a while)

500g mixed frozen veg.. or whatever you have in fridge (peas carrot corn is all you really need) (again 2kg veg cos I cook in bulk batches)

    1 onion (optional)

2tbs curry pdr (or to your taste add more or less)

    3/4 cup water

    2-3 cups rice.

Brown mince and onion add in water, curry pdr and veg. Cook till the water has absorberd into the mince mixture.

Cook rice and then add rice to the mince mixture and stir till combined.

Such and easy meal, healthy and cheap. We add bbq sauce when serving up. Have been making this meal for years.

Also I found a cheap spaghetti bol recipe that I will take a pic of and share.

Hope this helps. We normally spend 200 fn on groceries, for all of our needs but want to cut back so this thread is a great idea. Thanks op

Oh and with the mince recipe if you dont have rice you could make little pot pies or pasties with the mince if you have pastry. Or its yummy on toast, bread, jaffles or just by itself. Even mash potato or pasta. So versatile.

Or if you dont have rice or pastry you could bake some whole potatoes and put the mince inside potatoes and sprinkle cheese on top. We also do that with spag bol. Makes for cheap baked potato dish.

I made a delicious carrot soup tonight to have for lunches this week and it was super cheap.

    1kg bag of carrots ($1.99)
    3 onions (90c)
    1 teaspoon garlic
    2 cups vegetable stock
    Salt and pepper

Slice up carrots and onions. Put the carrots, onion and garlic into a saucepan with a little oil and cook until soft (about 10-15min). Pour in your stock and simmer for 40mins. Blend it all up and add salt and pepper to taste. So easy, cheap and yummy. Im just going to serve with bread.

If I was struggling to feed my family, I would feed them what I could afford.

I'm lucky and grateful that I don't have to count my pennies for my food budget.

not sure if it has been mentioned in this thread or not, but LENTIL SOUP. None of us here are big on lentils but you wouldn't even know they are in there! The kids think its just thick veggie soup. It's so yummy, easy, and cheap!!!
