Google the 120 biscuit recipe on the stay at home mums website... my kids love them and depending on what extras you add, they work out really cheap.

This is fantastic! If you have a bit extra you can treat once a week or swap a recipe for a family favourite even.

Last night we had dahl which is about $2 a packet of yellow split peas and some herbs and spices. It served 4 people. We have half in the freezer. Tonight I am making Jamie Olivers 15 minute ‘Cool Mexican bean wraps’, which I found on the net. The main ingredients are a can of kidney beans, tomatoes and some tortillas. Tomorrow we are having felafel rolls made with a can of chickpeas. All very cheap. All very yummy.

There was a recent study released which Rosemary Stanton was talking about on the radio at the end of last year that even kids can do better on a vegetarian diet. If you google rosemary Stanton vegetarian diet you will find info about it. There are also other books and stuff around about being vegetarian being a benefit to kids such as ‘disease proof your child’ by Dr Joel Fuhrman. Or ‘prevent and reverse heart disease’ Caldwell Esselstyne.
I’m really just writing about this to say that there is a lot of info that a vegetarian diet is very healthy and if you’re not giving your kids heaps of meat every night (which is expensive) then it’s OK. Vegitarian food is cheap and can be very healthy for you.
I second the "go vegetarian" idea. I make a vegetarian mexican soup regularly, filling and pretty healthy. Ditto chilli con carne. I also make lentil and rice soup, which my daughter calls "rice with beetles". Legumes are ridiculously good for you, cheap, and versatile!
