    Default Home Insemmnation Vs Clinic?

Hi everyone, my partner and I would love to start a family. I don't mind whether it is home or clinic except for the money but my partner I think would prefer Clinic. Does anyone know a clinic in Melbourne and how much it cost per session?
Also was wondering how many people believe which one is more successful?

well, a vial of sperm will cost almost a thousand dollars on its own . we are doing it at home, despite the annoyance and difficulty of donor searching, because of cost. there are success stories for both. one couple on here have two kids through home diy.
can't help you on other costs sorry

    Hey Alleycatz,

I can't comment on Melbourne clinics as my partner and I are in Brisbane but we use a clinic for IUI and have generally found it pretty reasonably priced - especially compared to IVF. Yes, its expensive, but so are kids! Here is a break down.

    Intial Consultation - $135 ($70 back -Medicare)
    Ultrasound - $75 ($30 -MC)
    Subsequent Consultations - $70 ($35- MC)
IUI Cycle - $700 ($390 - MC) *This covers all consultations, scans, shots, insemination, etc within your IUI cycle
Donor Sperm $450 (not eligible for MC)
Once off registration Donor sperm fee -$500 (No MC)
    Semen Prep -$150 ($40 MC)

Keep in mind once you reach your family safety net for $1100 OUT of pocket you get 80% of your out of pocket expenses back on anything eligible for Medicare rebates. Which happens pretty quickly.

My partner and I have had 2 rounds of IUI both resulting in pregnancies - however both ending in miscarriages. Very hard, but we have since had further testing to discover I have natural killer cells -which means my immune system went into overdrive and attacked the embryos.. so now we go again supressing my immune system and hopefully should be successful. Our Dr belielves that in healthy lesbian couples coming to him socially infertile not medically infertile it generally happens pretty quickly. Our Dr is amazing, love him to bits!

Anyway, just thought that might help for a bit of a run down.

Oh, and to use donor sperm in Australia you must have 2 manadatory sessions of counselling. They were $120 each.

Good luck on your journey what ever way you go!

    Hi,

I cant help on costs in Oz as I'm from the UK but we opted for DIY here because of cost, we decided that although kids are expensive yes we would rather use the funds spent for a clinic on our little one instead. We also really liked the idea of doing it at home where things could be a lot more relaxed and we thought romantic. Having said that being propped up on a pillow with a pot of sperm and a syringe really isn't particularly sexy whatever way you looked at it and whilst I imagined it to end up being a little Bette and Tina steamy session in the L word it was far far from it! Lol. That may just have been us though!
We were lucky and conceived on the second attempt and it is nice that we know it happened at home and it was relaxed and far less clinical but having to go and meet the donor before hand and collect etc kinda wasn't so great, for us anyway. I guess it all depends on your personal circumstances and who your using etc.
I think to be honest next time around we may well opt for a try with a clinic.
Best of luck whatever you do!

    Tink x
