    Default Allergic to Dairy

    Hi Everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has any dairy-free recipes for a 7month old? My daughter is now having solids for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as a breastfeed in between. She has baby rice cereal made up with breastmilk for breakfast, mashed apples and pear for lunch and mashed vegies for dinner. But she is getting sick of her apples and pear for lunch and she can't have anything with dairy products in it otherwise she all over the place. I have tried her on some creamed rice using coconut milk, but she wasn't too keen on that. Does anyone have any other ideas? Also does anyone have a recipe for homemade rusks? My daughter can't have the shop brought ones as they have milk in them too.

    Thanks

    Hi there Paigesmummy,
I too have a 10 month old daughter who is allergic to dairy. My MHCN only last week gave me a recipe book "Cooking without milk. The Infasoy Recipe book" so maybe ask your MHCN for a copy of this as its free. I found a great recipe for teething rusks on the Heinz website, just substitute the margarine/butter for Nutalex which is dairy free - heres the website link http://www.forbaby.com.au/modules/re...icle.php?id=55 Just be careful which cereal you buy as a few of the Heinz ones have dairy in them which is a mistake that I made!
It also has some recipe's that you can try out. My daughter loves eating a rice porridge meal which is basically mince chicken, carrot, beans, brocolli and rice boiled gently in chicken stock and water until it all goes really mushy and you can freeze it. As for dessert type things try jelly or there are some nice fruit mash blends in the bay food jars that don't have dairy in them. You could also make your own custard using soy milk or soy formula. You can also get soy yogurt from the supermarket, its not specifically for babies but they can eat it no problems. Has your daughter been tested for soy allergy as sometimes they can also be allergic to soy.
    Happy cooking!

I was alergic to dairy as a child (still am if I have to much).....

Mum used to give me Goats Milk. It doesnt have the lactose or something like that in it...*you could probably google a heap of information*.

Also you could try using Rice Milk...soy is bad for babies they say now days...but Rice Milk should be fine?

rice milk isnt suitable for under 5yrs according to the pack. best off to use a soy formula or lactose free formula.

i have a few recipies on my computer i can email them to you if you would like them but they are more suited to older bubs as my ds is a bit older then your bub.

Thank you for your replies. I haven't had my DD tested for any allergies yet, my CHN reckons that she is too young to be tested. I have tried her on some soy yoghurt, which she really enjoys, but I try not to give her too much as I have also heard is bad is bad for babies. She doesn't seem to react to it though. I might google a few things and also try the rice or goats milk in recipes.

    Thanks

i have heard fo newborns being tested for lactose intolerance so i dotn see why your DD is too young to be tested.
be careful with soy sometimes when you cant have dairy, your body will not let you handle soy very well either. if your bub handles soy well it will make it easier for you
i would go to the GP and ask for a test to put my mind at ease.

    Default Allergic to Milk protein

I think your bub should be okay for allergy testing, not too young. We had my son skin ***** tested for allergies at about 7 months of age at RPA allergy centre. His test came back positive for cows milk protein, which we had already guessed due to his vomiting and hives when he had formula.

ABout the rusks, there is a brand of bread sticks you can use put out by Bellamys (an organic brand avail at our local woolworths and coles). They have two types, "teething rusks" and "bread sticks". The bread sticks are supposed to be for 12 months plus but they are MILK FREE (the teething ones are not). We used them from 12 months.....before that I used to cook bread in a slow hot oven till it got hard and let DS chew on that.

as for cooking you can pretty much cook anything you want, replacing butter with Nuttelex (dairy free margarine) and also replace cows milk with soy milk. Having said that, it is quite common for people who are allergic to cows milk protein to be allergic to soy protein. My son was but thankfully has outgrown the soy allergy. We used to use his formula (neocate) for cooking in the early days (we use soy milk now).

I also used to cook up heaps of different steamed veg and blend them up with rice and chicken. Very plain, but thats what they need at that age. And in the health food section you can get a few cruskit type crackers made from corn and rice that have no milk in them - DS used to love chewing on them.

    Good luck

my ds reacts to soy and dairy. makes it a bit harder. i find alot of "dairy free" products contain soy, so it takes me forever to do grocery shopping. so yep i can back up what becstar said about the possibilty of soy senisitivity. i have been told by ds's peadtrician and gp its fairly common.

Oh by the way, goats milk is not okay if its an allergy as its not the lactose they are allergic to, its the protein. Goats milk is only okay for lactose intolerance, there is a difference.
