Default Home Birth Opinion Piece - yuck

Home birth Opinion Piece I know this is in the Herald Sun and an opinion piece but it seriously makes me go and some of the uneducated and ignorant comments....ahhhh....it always amazes me how they are allowed to scaremonger the cr@p out of pregnant women and is it just me or does there seems to be a lot of opinion pieces about pregnancy / child birth / child raising around at the moment

The article (and i use the term loosely) made me so incredibly angry...I couldn't even put a decent reply together because I just wanted to swear.

Useless, ignorant, arrogant, uneducated, untrue, and many many many other words come to mind.

I was the same Roopee I had to hold back my fingers and I haven't had a home birth...it just scares me how many young impressionable women will read this and not educate themselves on all the facts.

Blergh. This part made me particularly angry:

But where would he be if I was a mother who thought more about myself and my needs during labour than the safety of my child?
She sounds like she is extremely bitter about her own traumatic hospital birth and is taking it out on something she may feel too scared to do herself.

I wonder what will be made illegal next in order to eliminate womens rights even more.

Its funny you know, I have never had a home birth either,BUT,I want my daughters and her friends and all the women and men out there to be able to make the choice if thats what they want- its incredibly stupid of the author of that piece of crap to be touting such bullsh!t.

Its just her opinion dressed up as knowledge and none of it even TRUE! That's the bit thats laughable...in a totally infuriating way.

SF - I know that made my stomach turn it's like so because you've had a horrible experience then everyone who home births must put their needs before their childs.

Roopee - Once again completely agree I want women to have more rights and some of the opinions from matter of fact people and a doctor reminds me why I need to thoroughly research my OB if I can't have a homebirth.

It scares me how similar we are becoming to the US, medicine must know everything (and I am a huge ambassador for medicine and technology) and women don't know anything about their bodies.

Oh god, how about this comment:
"Sandiebeach of Somerville and Deb of Melb how about you tell that to the poor innocent babies who die or are permanently disabled.I think these mothers are total selfish for allowing any risk to their babies. Take note selfish ladies: its not all about you."

and this is from a DOCTOR!
"As a doctor it baffles me that so many women during pregnancy dutifully watch every thing they eat and drink, quit smoking participate in yoga and other important healthy activities all for the sake of their baby and yet during labour, probably the most dangerous time in any child's life, they choose to give birth at home miles from emergency assistance often with poorly trained "midwives" who have dangerous agendas of their own. I have met many women who have delivered children at home safely and they all tell me it was the best decision they ever made - of course they do, they got lucky and got away with it. I have also met many women who chose to have a home birth, had terrible outcomes for their child (including death or permanent intellectual disability) and NONE of them maintain it was a good idea. Most of these events would have been preventable in hospital. Child birth is natural but that does not mean it is necessarily safe. We should treat this miracle with the respect it deserves - allow women to deliver in hospitals with trained midwives who have the skill to manage normal deliveries and also know when the skills of an obstetrician and paediatrician are required."

argh. I wish i could have the homebirth i want, but it's not do-able for us, but it makes me so angry that the women who can have one, might not be allowed to due to d***heads like this ^.

That piece of drivel is not an article. It is merely the paranoid delusions of a very ill informed individual and should never have made it into print.

i would never in a million years opt for a home birth, but i read this piece this morning and was so so angry - why should women have to have it in a hospital? Who says thats the best place, we all know how happy the dr's are to slice and dice. Nice little bit about the birthing clinic that you can use but you have to tick so many boxes just to get accepted - its a joke.

the thing that really p!ssed me off was that it implied that medical intervention in a natural part of birthing. Sad and scary.
