Default Anyone had dating scan here??

    Hi everyone

I just got my BFP a week ago, and my doctor has referred me to have a dating scan because my periods have been irregular and I am totally unsure when I conceived.

Has anyone had a dating scan at 5-7 weeks? What does it entail? I assumed it was a normal 'gel on the tummy, scan it' type thing but then I've been reading stuff about scans that need be inserted vaginally?! Bit freaked out...

Anyone's experience and help would be much appreciated!!

Also, do they cost or are they bulk billed? I live in Melbourne and am going to a radiology centre in Clayton.

I had a dating scan two weeks ago, and they just did the normal scan on the tummy. I am lead to believe that if you dont drink enough water is when they use the internal one.

I had one it was just a regular on the tummy ultrasound...

They measure the length, mine just looked like a grain of rice, but from that they get an idea...

I was the same i thought i was about 3-4 weeks pregnant due to irregular period and turned out to be 8 weeks...

Was a great surprise being my first you have no idea what to expect from your body....

    Good Luck !!!

Mine was covered by Medicare, i think it depends on where you go and how you are referred..

I am in Sydney and on my referral form there is an option for your GP to mark Medicare or Private....

I had one done at 7 weeks and I had to drink a 1 litre of water and hr before. It was just gel on my tummy ultrasound.

They usually do internals if they cant see anything - what they cant pick up on the outside they can pick up on the inside

I thought I was about 7 weeks, and was only just 5 weeks. I had to have an internal as they couldn't see much with the tummy scan.
With the internal, all she could see was a yolk sac, not baby or heartbeat as it was too early.
I have to go back on Friday, (when I should be about 7 weeks) to make sure a baby and heartbeat has developed.
“When people say, "You really, really must" do something, it means you don't really have to. No one ever says, "You really, really must deliver the baby during labor." When it's true, it doesn't need to be said.”

They do an internal scan because your so early on and there isnt much to see at the moment. Dont worry about it, it doesnt hurt and it is more accurate. Good luck and enjoy being pregnant.

I had a dating scan last week in the obs room. I was refered by my gp to the ob & he done a quick one. I thought I was somewhere betweee 6 to 8 weeks, but I was 9 weeks 3 days. I think they can pick up a heartbeat from around 6 weeks.

From what I've heard internal scans are more accurate at this early stage. The place I went to does internal scans as standard for dating scans. I had mine done at 7w1d. Even my 12w NT scan had an internal component (allows them to measure cervix and ovaries better apparently).

I had a dating scan at 6w4d. Heartbeat was there, nice and healthy. It depends on how far along you are, and whether or not they can see enough/locate a heartbeat as to whether they will do an internal ultrasound though.
I know it can seem daunting, but I've had internal ultrasounds, and although a little uncomfortable, they're nowhere near as awkward as they sound like. When you want to see your little bub, you won't even think twice about it
