    Default Pre-Conception Vitamins and Iron

    Hi Gabriella,
Just wondering what you would advise with vitamins as I have too much iron (compound hemochromatosis) and alot of the vitamins have iron in them.
Also when would you recommend to start them before I TTC?

    Hi there Razzarach

I would definitely recommend you take comprehensive, personalised nutritional supplementation before trying to conceive without iron. Particularly in the 120 days preceding a conception attempt which is the time whilst the egg is maturing and the sperm is forming. This is also the time to optimise your prospective child’s health.

You see, what a lot of people don’t realise is that by 8 weeks gestation a baby’s health blueprint is set for the rest of their life. At this stage his or her health vulnerabilities and strengths are set by the ‘map’ already existent in this magnificent creation—your child’s future health predispositions and potentials are now in place regardless of what else happens from this point onwards and most parents-to-be are unaware of this crucial fact. Once a pregnancy is established your child’s health potential becomes the lowest common denominator of you and your partner’s health and its full potential has been reached—the opportunity for making significant improvements to your fertility and your child’s health in the future exists in the 120 days of preconception preparation before a pregnancy is even in sight. The time to optimise your child’s future, giving him or her the best possible start in life is NOT during your pregnancy—it is during your preconception preparation, involving both prospective parents.

So this is the crucial importance of this preparation period.

One final note, do not self-prescribe—find a competent practitioner to support you with this for 2 main reasons:

    1) You may short-change yourself by not knowing exactly what your body needs at this very important time and you may pick nutritional supplementation for the wrong reasons i.e. just because they are popular in the market etc
    2) Most over the counter products you buy on the shelves of pharmacies, health food stores or supermarkets and even highly endorsed products recommended by some doctors for this stage of life—are not as comprehensively or carefully formulated as some practitioner only ranges specifically designed for preconception, pregnancy and lactation.

Be aware... If a product is marketed to ‘give you all the nutrient value you need’ in ‘one tablet’—most likely you are taking the wrong product. It would be physically impossible to fit everything you and your prospective child needs into ONE tablet.

    I hope this helps.

Let me know if you have any further questions.
