    Default Please help Gabriela!!

    Hi Gabriela,
    I will be thinking of getting pregnant within the next 12 months. I am a fit and healthy 29 year old. I have been on the pill for about 13 years and was first put on it as my periods were irregular. I thought it may be good to go off the pill to chart my cycle (even though I am scared to know what will happen eg if it will come back and will it be regular or irregular). However one doctor HIGHLY advised me to not go off it as she stated that the month after going off the pill will be a time when I am most fertile and will have a good chance of getting pregnant. However if this doesn't happen then I may need to wait for a long period of time to get my cycle back to normal. I am stuck with people telling me to stay on it and only go off the pill when I want to fall pregnant. While others are telling me to go off it now. One doctor has said I may have PCOS, but they said they weren't sure and wont know until I start trying as I don't show signs of having it except for irregular periods. I also have a mild case of Chrones disease.
    Can you please advise me if I should stay on the pill so I have the chance of that first month, or do I go off it now??

    Dear Tulipss,

    You have an excellent question and I thank you for posting it here.

    In addition, let me CONGRATULATE you for your incredibly astute insight!

    The best thing for you to do given you are hoping to start trying to conceive in the next year is to get off the pill now and begin charting your cycle and getting familiar with your body’s own fertility signs.

    There are many reasons for you to get off the pill now, however the top 3 reasons are:

    1. You want to give you body the chance to detoxify from all the synthetic hormones that negatively impact your fertility and can also negatively affect the developing embryo;
    2. The pill imbalances nutrient levels and can make you nutritionally deficient, which you are already prone to due to Crohn’s Disease—and this in turn can also negatively impact your fertility and baby later on; So start helping your body back to balance now!
    3. Your body will need some time to fully re-balance and regulate itself again. You see, the egg takes about 120 days to mature and it needs a pristine environment without toxins and chemicals for best results.

    The longer you give your body to get back to balance, the better for your fertility, your health, and ultimately your baby’s health in the long term as well!

    There is a great book I suggest you read if are at all unsure of the negative impacts of the oral contraceptive pill, it’s called: The Pill: are you sure it's for you? By Alexandra Pope and Jane Bennett.

    The pill is NOT a way of “balancing” any woman’s cycle, what it does, very effectively is mimic pregnancy and artificially manipulates a woman’s natural cycle and fertility. In clinical practice I am often astounded by the number of woman that go on the pill, to get off and find that they have developed PCOS and/or other hormonal imbalance symptoms they never had before going on the pill.

    Luckily, there are many natural ways to help support your body back to balance. In my clinic this is one of our areas of speciality.

    Also for your situation (mild Crohn’s) begin being very careful with what you put into your body! A fertility style diet from now would also be ideal. My book Eat Your Way to Parenthood: The diet secrets of highly fertile couples revealed (available from my website) will be very useful.

    A couple of quick tips:

    · Base your meals on fresh and unprocessed foods wherever possible;
    · Avoid fried foods and heated vegetable oils all together;
    · Go dairy and gluten FREE
    · Buy as much organic produce as you can afford—especially your meats, chicken, eggs and any vegetable and fruit you cannot peel.

    A final word on the pill: In my view, it confuses the body regarding when and how to produce hormones and cycle naturally.

    Of course I also don’t believe in unwanted pregnancies, and because of this I firmly believe that a woman’s greatest asset is to know her own body and her own unmistakeable signs of fertility for conception or natural contraception.

    P.S. I disagree your greatest conception chance is the first month off the pill. You will be in better health for you and your prospective child the sooner you and your partner begin optimising your daily choices and fertility for conception.

    I hope this helps.

    Let me know if you have any further questions.
