    Default Follicular Cyst

    Hi

After a short bout of gross hematuria, I had a renal scan. That all came back clear, but during the scan they noted a Follicular Cyst, that was larger than my ovary (ovary = 25mm x 15mm x 16mm - cyst = 25mm x 28mm x 16mm).

They scanned the left side first, then the right (where the cyst was found), but they did not go back and re-check the left.

My question (s) are..... Considering Follicular Cysts can stick around for a few months before dissipating, is there any way to tell if this is an old or a new cyst? Or more importantly, if I ovulated this cycle? Also, can you ovulate (from either ovary) while you have a follicullar cyst on one of your ovaries.

I've previoulsy had an ovarian ectopic pregnancy (treated with methotrexate) so ANYTHING abnormal with my ovaries gives me cause for concern.

I have booked in with my OBGYN (WEEKS away), but I thought I would see if you had any information in the interim.

    Hope you can help.

    Hi Giveitago,

    I totally understand.

The answers really do depend on the type of cyst you have. Generally speaking you can’t really ‘date’ the cyst i.e. whether it’s new or old. As far as I am aware the only way to tell this would be from reviewing previous ultrasounds (if you’ve had them) and check whether the cyst was there before.

The best way to find out if you are ovulating regularly is by tracking your cycle. FertilityFriend.com is a great free service that teaches you exactly how to do that. Generally, speaking the ovaries alternate in releasing an egg each month but in your specific situation that will depend on how or if the cyst is affecting your patterns or your ovary’s ability to release an egg.

For your information there are many types of ovarian cysts that can be treated naturally. Overall, hormonal balance is very important for a healthy reproductive system and optimum liver function, a good diet and biochemical balance all go hand in hand towards this end.

    I hope this helps.

Let me know if you have any further questions.
