Thought I'd pop in with a little update after seeing our FS yesterday.

I got some rather shocking news that back in 2008, DH's BT had very high FSH and he was recommended to immediately freeze some sperm . After my appointment, I asked him about it and he had a vague memory we were supposed to go back for 'something'.... Suffice it to say he'll not be going to any appointments alone in future!!

So what does high FSH mean for men? I should've asked the FS while I was there, but guess I was too shellshocked to think straight. I did some googling and seems it can be an indicator of a chromosomal defect (like Klinefelters). One article said that the higher the FSH, the lower the sperm count. Basically, high FSH means there's a testicular failure of some sort. Has anyone come across this before and has a story to share?

Now DH is having all the BT's and SA redone to see where he's at.

On the plus side, if they find sperm in the new SA, we can start ICSI next month!

More from me later when we have some results. Hope you lovely ladies are all well.
When DH had zero sperm in his first SA they tested his FSH and found it was very high, which our FS said was an indication that he wasn't producing any sperm.
When DH went back for his 2nd SA they found 4 sperm and his FSH was a little lower.

I have been trying to find out what can lower the FSH but to no avail.

Hi puffsgirl, thanks for your reply. I too have been looking for info on how to lower it and coming up empty. The naturopath we were seeing had success stories of bringing down women's FSH, so I may get back in touch with them to see if they have experience with high FSH in men too.

I noticed you've joined the July IVF thread. Good luck and to you! Hopefully I'll be joining you there shortly.

    Hi Lindy & Puffs,

Lindy, my DH has this same issue (amongst others). Our FS is trialing him on Pregnyl at the moment to try to bring down FSH and increase testosterone.

He's been on 1500iu twice a week for about 3 months. His FSH has come right down and his testosterone has gone up. We thought this was a good sign (it means the testicles are responding), however, to date it hasn't translated into any sperm. He had a SA done last week. We are continuing on for another 6 weeks to see if it has made a difference by then...not getting our hopes up at SA was zero count.

Our FS says that it can take about 12 months to work in certain guys. Also, there are varied views around the potential success, however, we thought anything was worth a try.

It might be worth mentioning to your specialist? Let me know if you find any other potential options.

    Take care, Holly.

    Hi Holly,

Thanks so much for your reply. Its amazing the things we learn thru BH! The hormone level changes in your DH do sound positive. Really hope that continuing the treatment will yield some swimmers soon!

If my DH's FSH is still high, will definitely ask our FS about pregnyl. I totally agree that anything is worth a try.

Waiting up to 12 months for MFI treatments to kick in is tough, we'll never complain about an itty bitty TWW

Look forward to hearing how things progress for you and your DH. Good luck!

    Holly,

Thanks for keeping us updated about your DH progress on Pregnyl.

I have decided to go ahead with our first ICSI treatment in July and if they find no sperm, then i will mention Pregnyl to my FS.

Goodluck with your DH treatment and I hope everything works out well for you!

    Megan

    Hi Girls,

Gee our MFI thread has gotten quiet, time to bump it back up!

For those of you who are interested, my DH's new results are in and fortunately not as gloomy as I was expecting. His last SA in 2008 had 0.4 million/mL, the new SA had 5 million/mL! Incredible, its more than ten-fold higher! Another plus is that 20% are in the rapid progressive class, whereas before it was none (all were slow, non-progressive or non-motile). Morph is still low at 5% normal forms and FSH is still high at 21. Although we won’t get pregnant naturally with those numbers, it’s a step in the right direction and it means we’ve been able to start our ICSI cycle straight away.

6 months leading up to these results, DH had:
No alcohol, not even a drop (torture according to him!)
    Limited coffee (2-3 per week)
Nourishing Flora probiotic (one capsule daily)
Blackmores Bio-Ace Excell (one capsule daily)

Next I’m adding goji berries, pumpkin seeds and menevit (following advice given in the earlier posts), plus contacting our naturopath about treatment for the high FSH. Will post again later when they’ve replied.

I am so thankful for my DH’s improvement and wish there was a way I could pass on our little victory to all of you. I really hope that whatever treatments your DP’s/DH’s are on are working and there’ll be armies of swimmers on their way.

    Bye for now

    Lindylou,

I am glad your DH's SA has improved!!!!

I wish I could get my DH to try goji berries and pumpkin seeds but he won't go near the stuff.

He has given up all alcohol though so that is a start. We have an appointment with a Herbalist on Thursday to see what she can do for us. Funnily enough this was DH's idea!

    Hi Puffsgirl,

Glad to hear your DH has given up the booze and initiated the naturopathy. But wait 'til he gets his first mouthful of herbal potion- he'll be begging for something as yummy as pumpkin seeds & goji berries then!!

When we were on herbal formulas, I had to dilute my dose with cordial or juice, swallow it whilst holding my nose, follow with a cordial/juice chaser then let go of my nose. And I still had a shocking aftertaste!! We christened the stuff 'poo water'. Amazing things do happen though, I credit those herbs for fixing my luteal phase.

Good luck with your appointment, and hope your herbs taste better than ours did

    Hey lindylou78,

Glad your Dh got better results and you can start your IVF cycle soon.

We are still waiting for the results of my DH's last SA which will determine if we can try naturally (if the AB's cleared up a blockage- although this is unlikely) or if we need to book him in for a biopsy to see if they can get some sperm out that way then we will be off for IVF too.

I called the FS and left a message and they never call back....it is so annoying, so Im going to keep ringing as of tomorrow until I can get them to answer....It took me over a week to get through to them last time I had to call so Im not expecting much....

Anyhow hopefully we will find out where to next for us soon....

puffsgirl11, I think at least you have a start with giving up the grog. My DH has done NOTHING....but then with a blockage there probally isnt anything that is going to help us anyhow....
