    Hey guys,

Just a question that I though you might have more knowledge about. DH had a vasectomy reversal back in Nov 08 and we got BFP in Dec 08 and had out daughter. Anyhow now we are trying for No2 and have found through 2 SA DH has no sperm count. Dr did a blood test and said it seems like there is a blockage (scar tissue probally formed after op). But he did say probally no point getting the reversal done again?

Just wondering if anyone had this problem and had a 2nd reversal done? I guess its just we got preg naturally 1st month so Im not sure why he would advise against getting it done again? I guess Im a bit scared about going down this IVF path and would like to try natural again and thought that this could be an option.... any thoughts?

Later at the IVF clinic I needed to do another SA to confirm the morph. problem. It seems they were accurate.

    Cheers all.

    Hi Paul

Thanks very much for your response. Much appreciated. And it's wonderful to see that you and your other half ended up getting your BFP. Well done! and good luck as the big day approaches.

    thanks again

    Hi All,
I'm new to BH and have been finding it sooo informative. Thanks PennyPC for starting this thread.
My DH had 2 SA's about 6 months apart, this was back in 2007 and both were very poor. Counts of 0.9M and 0.4M, morphology <30% normals. Motility was OK though for those small numbers of sperm that were there. We were told ICSI was our only option.
The results were very difficult to take and we had many arguments about lifestyle changes that I believed were necessary. DH had this stubborn attitude that every other bloke we know who is overweight, drinks alcohol, coffee, etc, had no probs having kids.
After 5 yrs trying, DH wants to move onto IVF. I gave an ultimatum and said I'm not putting my body thru a hormonal & emotional rollercoaster if he wasn't prepared to make a few simple sacrifices (as I had already done). Besides, I believe its least he can do to give our future children the best possible start in life.
Now he has lost weight (BMI was 31, now 28 and dropping), cut out alcohol, cut back coffee, taking supplements and more physically active (as per Naturopath's advice). Going back to our FS in June, so looking forward to seeing if there's any change to his SA.
Another issue we have against us is that DH had undescended testes as a baby. Although he was operated on, the 'boys' still cling very close to his body and do not hang freely (ie/ tight scrotum). Thus, his poor swimmers are no doubt being overcooked.
Sorry for the long post and probably too much information, but I can't discuss these things with family or friends, because DH doesn't want anyone to know he has MFI.
Its very enlightening to read the other posts and there are some extra tests I will now ask for at the FS next month and will probably invest in some goji berries & pumpkin seeds too!

    Hi Everyone

I haven't posted for awhile and have never posted in this thread but was wondering if any of you guys have experience/knowledge of your male partners having to take pregnyl to increase sperm count???

A little bit about me - I am 25 with one DD - 2.5yrs (naturally), my DH has had a vasectomy and IVF/ICSI was our only option. Cycle no 1- down reg with pill - was cancelled as i only grew 4 follies on 150 gonal F. Cycle 2 - was down reg without pill - was with 300 Gonal F but again i only grew 4 follies. We were advised to go ahead with EPU as it looks like i am only capable of growing around 4 follies - whish i was really upset about as there is apparently nothing wrong with me and i am only 25. Anyway - they did a biopsy on DH to retrieve sperm but not enough to do a semen analyse. There next morning i got the phone call to say that only one fertilised then an hour later they phoned to say that even though it fertilised it was abnormal so unable to be used - so we were left with nothing.

After consultation with FS - it would appear that my DH younger years of using steriods (used to be a body builder) has significantly decreased his sperm. So the Dr has put me on DHEA til Sept - with an antagonist cycle next time in stead of down reg and place my DH on pregnyl injections (3 a week) from now until September - has anyone ever heard of this, and more importantly did it work for you?

I hope all that made sense..

I wish everyone the best of luck with where you are at in your journey/ cycles.

Hi MUMMAof1 - I've heard about pregnyl shots, but don't have any information on them unfortunately. Perhaps if we try to keep this thread on the front page, others who know might be able to jump in and help you! I think I heard about the pregnyl shots on another forum (maybe?) which has a male factor infertility section at www.fertilityfriends.co.uk . Perhaps the ladies there might have some info for you? Let us know what you learn as it could be helpful for others of us!

Paul64 - lovely to see you back on our forums! How's wifey going baking your bun? She must be due shortly isn't she?

Jacklicky - Sorry I don't know too much vas reversals. I think there may be a whole thread devoted to it, so you might like to pop in there and see if those ladies have any info for you? Let us know how you get on with finding out info. It would be great if we could consolodate some information on this thread for others to benefit from.

Lindylou - Welcome. Definately give the berries and seeds a go. They certainly won't hurt. Good on you for convincing DH about the clean living schedule! I'm proud of you! I've heard your DH's theory before about all their mates being able to get their spouses pregnant while drinking and smoking and overeating... I know it's not fair on them - but nothing to do with infertility is fair is it? Glad he ended up seeing reason!

to everyone else. How are you all going?

AFM - We secured some donor sperm today. It would be wonderful if we could find some way around DP's chromosonal abnormalities in his sperm, but it's not looking promising - so I suppose at least we now have a back up! We were lucky enough to find a great match for him, so we decided to secure it quickly as we may not be that lucky down the track!

Hey PennyPC, well done on getting the donor sperm which was a match......must be good to know it is there if you have to use it.

Well we went to the FS and he did an examination and ultrasounds on DH's bits....He did say that there was a bit of tenderness still at the join site of DH's reversal which is probally our problem. DH is now on AB's in the vain hope that there is some swelling/infection there that is causing the blockage. Very tiny chance this will work. But if it doesnt (we only trying for 1 mth) then Dh gets a biopsy done to see if they can get any sperm out and then i guess we would be doing ICSI if they find any.

Thanks for letting me know about the Vas Reversal thread. Ill go look for it. The FS did say we can get the reversal done again but there is about 50% chance of it working...and I dont think I could convince DH to do that given he only wants one more...maybe its just something we can think about if I dont respond if we have to do IVF....

Anyhow there will probally not much else happening from me until the end of the month. We are meant to be trying naturally this month in the hope the AB's work but I havent got AF yet so I think Im in for a long cycle so we might have his SA before we even get a chance to try....

Goodluck to everyone...I might be a bit quiet for the next few weeks just because nothing is happening...

    Hi All,

PennyPC- So pleased to hear you've got donor sperm as a back up. You know sometimes when you put contingencies in place, and then bang!Plan A ends up working out- I really hope that happens for you and your DP. I've been snooping in on your blogs and the rough trot you've had brings tears to my eyes. Surely there will be some good news around the corner.

Jacklicky & Mummof1- sorry, I can't offer any advice on your situations. But will follow the discussion on pregnyl treatment for men... very interested in the outcome. Good luck to both of you!

Like Jacklicky, I won't have any news for awhile. Got my FS appointment 15/6, by the end of June should have new SA results and see what our options are. I've been trying to engineer some kind of testicular cooling device, since DH's scrotum doesn't sag as it should, but he is having none of it. If the new SA results come back as low as in 2008, despite all the clean living, then the temp issue will become my next mission!!

    Hey Lindylou78,

You seriously had me laughing out loud with your "testicular cooling device"....I cant believe your DH wont go for it!!!!

I have just had to be on at DH about taking his AB's he is a shift worker so it is hard to find a time of the day he is awake and able to take them..and of course he has to have a meal before hand which makes it near impossible. He also doesn't believe they will work so is kinda half hearted about it. Oh well we might as well give it a go. We are only loosing a month.

    Hey Jacklicky,

Yes, we gotta keep our sense of humour in all this. There's an episode of The Simpsons where Apu is "chilling his loins" by sitting in the icecream freezer in the Kwik-e-mart, and he and Manjula later end up with Octuplets. I'll settle for just 1!

I figure I will have more bargaining power after we've had a round of IVF and he sees what us ladies have to go thru. Strapping a tube around his bits and ventilating them at night with an air pump should pale in comparison to the injections, BTs, ultrasounds, transfers, etc. Much more comfortable than an ice pack in the undies too!

I haven't posted in a little while, but wanted to give you an update - we had another appt with our FS last week, & he is happy for us to start ICSI whenever we're ready. So in a week & a half we have our orientation visit, & then straight into it!

I am a little bit nervous, but it feels more surreal than anything else. Realistically I know that it probably won't work for us on the first cycle, but I can't help getting my hopes up.

Hmm, me thinks we're only just at the beginning of the rollercoaster ride! Bring it on I say!
