Default Dr Nigel Dore..... re Asthma..... so confused

Hi, we have a 3 year old that our gp and her pead doctor both say is asthmatic. Our delemer is that we were sent to Dr DOre the only pead lung specialist in qld. He told us she may have floppy air ways.... our gp said rubbish and our pead said Dr dore always says that about under 5s. Have you had any dealings with him? We just want to fix our daughters coughing and help her breathe.

We have taken DS to see Dr Dore quite a few times now as our gp was telling us he had asthma as he is always sick. He did a number to tests and xrays and he too told us that DS doesn't have asthma.

I personally found him really good and as we live 3 hours away from his office, he gave us scripts to cover DS if he got sick and also gave us his pager number etc to contact whenever.

I don't know him at all (sorry), but did he offer a treatment plan for your dd's breathing problems? To me, it doesn't matter so much what the actual condition is (or isn't) called, but what to do about it. What treatment was offered and what do the other doctors think about the treatment? It may be that he doesn't label any child under 5 with breathing trouble as having asthma, but he might treat them the same as an asthmatic & just wait & see.

At our first visit, he ordered further xrays as DS had microplasma pneumonia for a couple of months prior and had just got over that. After we got the results back and he was happy that DS didn't have asthma, he gave us the scripts etc and told us to come back in a month. We have been back 3 more times now but haven't been in for a little while as DS has been well it last! I want to take DS in when he is really sick like he gets during winter just so he can see exactly how bad he gets.

Can you get a second opinion? try Steven Morrison at the Royal Children's hospital in Bris or Simon Bowler at the Martyr another is Pete Smith, pacific private suites Gold Coast or even Ian Yang Prince Charles hospital. These are the 4 most prominent in this field in QLD.

DH used to work in this field. Good luck.

They're not paeds specialists rather general but some should take kids, anyway they know their stuff if you can get in to see on of them. Good luck!

Does your child respond to ventolin or other reliever medication? I would find it difficult to say its floppy airways if they are already responding to the meds and declared as havings a RAD (reversible airways disease).

My DS gets both asthma and croup. Croup is similar-ish to having a floppyairway and I can tell you 100% none of this standard asthma treatments do anything for the actual airway. The only thing that stops his airway crushing his larynx and closing the airway is steroids. I had a poor quality GP tell us when DS was small that it was due to floppy airways and could not possibly be asthma. When we got to the childrens hospital in Sydney they said he shouldn't be respond to standard asthma meds if that was the case
