Default Safety of beauty products with essential oils in them while TTC & pg

    Hi Gabriela,

Just wondering re the safety of beauty products that have essential oils in them as I know there are some essential oils that are contraindicated in pregnancy? I use a lot of organic/herbal/natural products and want to make sure it is still safe. I use in particular the tea tree & mint shampoo and conditioner by Avalon Organics and I love it.....but it has tea tree oil, peppermint, eucalyptus in it. Would this have an impact being in a hair treatment as it is washed out?
Also what about in moisturisers, body washes etc? I use the Akin range for my face and body.

    Thanks

    Hi Minipolly,

    Thanks for your great question!

Certain undiluted essential oils directly onto the skin can be a problem during pregnancy. But diluted in the way you are talking about... Even tea tree will be ok. You are not soaking in shampoo for hours are you? ;-)

Here’s the thing though, most chemicals found in some “natural” and most conventional brands of shampoos, cosmetics, personal hygiene items etc in the market these days can be so toxic to pregnant woman and their developing embryo that I recommend always checking.

The http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com is an awesome resource. Just type in the product you’d like to research and pronto! You get some quick, useful and comprehensive breakdown of what you should not be putting in your shopping trolley. I am very particular about the products I recommend for my patients to use (more info on my website) because they are some of the few in the market that are truly natural.

Remember, the skin absorbs approximately 3 times more chemicals by topical application than if you were to eat what you put on your skin. So be aware of what you are using—that’s the key!

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any further questions.

    Hi Gabriela,

Thanks for the info, it is really hard to find products I know I can trust! Can you please tell me whereabouts on your website I can find the list of products you recommend? I have been looking but cannot find it?

    Thanks again
