Default Irregular periods - tips for trying to conceive

    Hi Gabriela

I am keen to get some advice about how to naturally boost my ability to conceive. I have been getting very irregular periods since a medically necessary D & C just under 2 years ago. In fact I went without a period for over a year following the procedure. (I always had a regular 28 day cycle previously, on and off the pill). I have been back and forth for pelvic ultrasounds and there does not seem to be any damage to my uterine lining. I have had my thyroid tested (normal) and was put on a progesterone trial for 7 days (did not result in a period, but did result in significant cramping).

My periods are now intermittent, and I am wondering if you have any advice about how to promote a regular period? My partner and I would like to start a family soon, and I assume that without a period I'll find it diffiuclt to fall pregnant.

    With thanks in advance.

    Hi Arabelle,

You are correct that is it harder to get pregnant when your periods are irregular. And that getting it sorted well in advance of you beginning conception attempts is the smartest thing to do.

I’d recommend you get specific advice and treatment by a specialist naturopath who can prescribe hormonal balancing herbal medicines to support hypothalamic/pituitary/ovarian communication helping to normalise cycles.

Irregular periods are often a sign that your body needs a little balancing, which is not totally abnormal post certain surgical procedures. In addition, further (blood) hormonal testing is also recommended to rule out any other conditions that can impact the regularity of your cycles.

Here are some useful tests your doctor can prescribe: Day 2 FSH, LH, Testosterone (free and bound), SHBG, prolactin, progesterone, oestrogen.

Finally, on my website (shop section) you will also find more information about an audio program for fertility that may be very useful in your situation.

    I hope this helps!

Let me know if you have any further questions.
