    Default low vitamin d

    Hi

    Has anyone had low vit d and been told to take supplements? The nurse from my gp clinic rang toay and said I should go to the pharmacy for a supplement but didn't say how much - just go to the pharmacy.

    Should my supplement be matched to my level of deficiency or is it a one size fits all supplement?

    thanks

    Do you spend much time in the sun? That is probably the biggest thing that will help your body produce it naturally.

    I would just take the dosage suggested on the bottle...talk to someone at a healthfood shop or chemist about it. If you take too much, you will just wee it out.

    This is the recommendations :

    Infants

    * 0 - 6 months: 5 micrograms per day (mcg/day)
    * 7 - 12 months: 5 mcg/day

    Children

    * 1 - 13 years: 5 mcg/day

    Adolescents and Adults

    * Males and Females age 14 to 50: 5 mcg/day
    * Males and Females age 51 to 70: 10 mcg/day
    * Males and Females age over 70: 15 mcg/day

    Good luck

    don't stress my ob said most of her patients are low in vit D

    we just don't spend enough time in the sun these days

    vit d like all vitamins your body takes what it needs and the rest it gets rid off

    with your 28 weeks bloods they will test again and see if levels have increased

    My nutritionist recommends that we spend 10 minutes in the sun early every morning without sunblock on to get our daily vitamin d requirements. Just a thought!

    I have a vit d deficiency too and my GP said a good prenatal vit (Elevit, Blackmores and a couple of others) should do the trick (if you are already taking one)

    I actually just got told last week that my Vit D level was low and to take Ostelin once a day (I feel like an old granny!).

    For the record I spend plently of time in the sun, Im always out and about walking; some people just dont store Vit D.

    Good luck

    I spoke to a paedeatrician who wore a headscarf and was quite experienced with vit d deficiency. She said taking normal dose would not elevate my levels sufficiently, she suggested a big does at the beginning (like 5 Ostelins a day) the tapering off as levels increase. She said one aday would elevate my levels - in 20 years!!!
    Worked for me, but you should check with your health professional of course

    I was told a similar thing, had to spike my levels using a liquid supplement it had like 3000 as opposed to the 15 the normal tablets gave me. However, I had to do this before I got pregnant. I wouldn't take a high dose without doctors recommendations particularly while pregnant.

    I had low Vit D in my pregnancy and started taking ostevit. By the time my bloods came back at 28 weeks, my levels had come back up to normal. I also started taking lots of calcium and walking out in the sun each day on my lunch break
