Question Wisdom Teeth - IV sedation or General Anaesthetic?

    Hi Girls ,

Just wondering if anyone has had their Wisdom Teeth out under IV sedation or General Anaesthetic? I have to get mine done soon and the Oral Surgeon has ticked IV sedation but I am wondering whether or not I will get too anxious and freak out iykwim?

I have to get all 4 wisdom teeth removed(2 have broken through the skin the top two haven't) along with a molar out that has an infected root canal and can't be saved

Can anyone enlighten me on how your teeth went?

I'm so nervous and don't know whether the Sedation will freak me out....

    Thanks

I bet you are scared. Would IV sedation be similar to a general? Surely he wouldn't allow you to be aware of what is going even if you can't feel it.
I've only had one out and that was in the chair at the dentist and it was bluddy awful, if I ever need to get the others removed I'll be insisting on a general.

When he ticked the box was general in a box as an option next to it. I haven't heard that term before(iv sedation) but personally would be asking VERY nicely to be knocked out.

I hope you get your way, big hugs

    Was no help sorry

I got all 4 out under GA. I hate the dentist chair and rather be knocked out during the procedure coz I am a chicken

One was impacted and the other 3 were already through. I was able to eat straight away and i could have come back to work that day or the next.

If you feel uncomfortable getting the IV then ask to be kncoked out completely. Someone will need to drive you back home and will have to be with you for 12 hours.

    Thanks girls

Mitake I think IV sedation is similar to general however you are awake but not a conscious awake if that makes sense? Apparently you don't have any recollection of it happening.

There was a box below with the General option I think I may call the surgeon and see if I can get a general.

Mrse I am so chicken and am worried that I will be traumatic as silly as that sounds! Glad to hear that yours went well hopefully mine goes the same at least then I hopefully wont get the migraines caused by these teeth coming through!

All the best hun with it all!

I am a migraine sufferer too and they caused a lot of havoc! Get them out sooner rather than later

    Good luck

I think you should be fine with IV Sedation. Often Colonoscopies and Gastroscopies (where they insert cameras into either end of the gastrointestinal tract) are done under sedation and every patient I have had has not remembered it afterwards etc.

I have had 3 wisdom teeth pulled out, but all at different times and in the chair. There must be something wrong with me cause I didn't find it horrible, traumatic or painful at all. It was very simple and quick and over in a few minutes (except for the bottom one which wasn't erupted- that took a bit of digging ).

Both the top ones were fully through though and quite decayed, apparently that happens a lot with wisdom teeth.

I had all 4 out under GA, I am definitely a chicken and found I was less nervous knowing I would be knocked out.

Wouldn't have had it any other way.

I would be asking for a general. I had 3 taken out under general. One of mine was growing horizontal instead of vertical so that took alot of digging and stitches. That was the most painful. The ones that we normal I didn't get any real discomfort with. Just a bit of irritation from the stitches. My face swelled up and I had a black eye, but that was from the tooth that was horizontal. My BIL had his out a few weeks ago and he was fine. Hardly any swelling, and only mild discomfort after. He also had a general.

Mrse thanks for the well wishes I’ve booked in for May 3 it can’t come quick enough as I feel another migraine coming on this afternoon

Shaker Maker, Oh I have had both a Colonoscopie and a Gastroscopie but it was when I was a teen and can’t remember whether I had a general or an IV and I definitely do not remember any of that only remember vomiting at home after the procedure :S Ha ha ha I don’t think there is anything wrong with you, I don’t mind getting teeth out (or other treatment) it’s more than knocking out and not waking up I am afraid of

Kate – how was your recovery if you don’t mind me asking?

Littleskippy – Ouch that must have really hurt , mine are just growing straight (from what I can remember from the OPG they were). It’s funny how different people can react to the same procedure, how long did it take for your swelling to come down?

Well I am booked in for May 3, still doing the IV sedative I spoke with one of the nurses and she was fantastic in easing my concerns and minds, now hoping my recovery doesn’t drag on as I have to taste food for our wedding 10 days later lol
