    Default 1st Birthday Present?!

    Hi there,
Any tips for a present for my DP's nephew who is turning one??
I have never had to buy gifts for kids before, and I'm at a loss! Not sure if I should think about mum or baby when buying, useful vs cute etc!
Any help would be much appreciated
    Me 24, DP 24

Books are always nice - maybe something you can write in. Or toys - Fisher Price do lots of great toys for a 1 year old. Clothes are always a good choice too. My nephew got a cute pair of dunlop volley pre-walkers recently for his birthday or there are some nice leather one's around too.

    Goodluck!

I love the idea of books because they can be used for so much longer than a lot of toys etc.
You could get a really good quality nursery rhyme book or similar and put a dedication in the front cover to the child. That way their parents can keep the book and it can become a lovely keepsake.

You can then add a few cheap toys that will be of interest the the bub so they aren't jsut getting a boring old book.
    He (29), Me (27) and DD (1) make 3!
    But wait... there's more!

There is a really beautiful book called "Peepo" that my son was given for his first birthday. It's still haas favourite. My sister wrote on the inside cover of it for him. Also, "Where is the Green Sheep?" or "Find Duck" are great for that age.
Me, DH and two kids. One is a baby. The other one thinks he is.

"Where is the Green Sheep?" is an awesome book! We just recently had to retire it as one of DD's bedtime books because she knew it by heart and wouldn't pay attention (she'd show off by quoting it without even seeing what page it was open at! ).

All of the rhyming, poetic books are great I think for 1 year olds! Heck they are great for any age! Dr Suess, Mem Fox, Edward Lear etc are all great authors with some wonderful poetic stories for littlies.

Peepo and Green sheep is my DD's favs as well, great books and I believe they are also very helpful with early speech development. Both are cardboard style books so no need to worry about pages getting ripped. Children get inundated with toys that from experience rarely get played with and are gone and forgotten about an hour later. Books are forever and most children seek refuge in a book at the end of an exhausting day. I say keep it simple

I saw a book recently called the 'quiet book' and its recommended for 3 and above due to small bits in it but its lovely, made out of material and zips up into a little brief case. RRP for them is about $25. One I saw recently had pages that you can press stud shapes onto it, do up zips, do up buttons, do up shoe laces.

You can never go wrong with books

Do not, under any circumstance, buy soft toys - those things breed around babies and small children. I think I have about three bags full of soft toys from when DS and DD were born that they have not played with and there is no more room on their shelves to display.

Fisher Price sorting blocks were the best present my DS got for his first birthday. They kept him amused for ages.

Keep in mind the amount of space a toy takes up when buying them - don't buy some huge present that is fun but that the parents have no where to put between playtimes. DS had a big green dinosaur you put balls into and rolled out of, etc. He loved it and it was a really great toy but we don't have a lot of space in our house and I used to constantly trip over the rotten thing. It was too tall to put into a cupboard or under the spare bed so it had to live in the middle of the living room floor.

Books really are a great present (and take up a small amount of space). Good luck with your shopping!
