Miss you Daddy
We went to a 1st birthday yesterday, I bought a book & my first Thomas train. J has a thing for wheels but is only teeny tiny, he can hold the train & spin it's wheels.

Get something that is old skool!! A wooden tractor or abacus etc
I find (inc my own nephew) that little ones that have it all (50 presents alone from his parents on his birthday!!!!) it tends to be plastic stuff- kids love the traditional stuff- wooden blocks etc
The link above is an awesome webshop which sells really good quality toys that also guarantee kid safe paint on them too!!
I think if you can give something for the first birthday that they can keep, it would be nice
There are box frames (like deep photo frames) you can get, inside you can frame their first pair of booties (or a nice pair). If you get a frame with 4 boxes, you can include their foot prints on card in one frame as well.
I got mine cheap from the reject shop for $20. You can also get them in Big W.
So I would get one of their "babyhood" items, and frame it for their mum and dad as a birthday gift ... maybe?
You could also do a photobook, where you select nice pics from the first year of their life and put them together to be printed in booklet form (at Big W). Like, pics of their first bath etc right up to their first birthday. You don't have to give it to them on the exact day of the b'day, it can be given later to include that special day as well
Don't judge me by how many children I have, my marital status, age, job, income, looks, religion, location, colour, or sex.
oh, the wooden toy idea is good too - you could personalise one each with their names

Don't buy them the same gift. Even though they are twins, they have different personalities, so buy each of them a gift according to their personalities. And give them individual cards as they will mainly received one with both their names on it and makes it hard when they have seperate memory boxes!
If you like wooden toys also try Eco Toys

a Playskool ball popper!. ds got one for his 1st bday, he loves it!. the balls roll down a track and pop out the top, sometimes they spill out and DS loves collecting them all and putting them back in. plus, you would only need to buy one!. comes with 5 balls.
awesome pressie, DEFINITLY the BEST present he got.. and that was out of about 100..lol
How about individual cultery sets. You can get gorgeous ones with animals or faces and get their names engraved on their own set.
You could buy each a cork board, stick a large clip at the top and decorate each with their name, to be hung on the wall for their artwork to come...
Money boxes
If they are walking or starting to toddle, a pram or little shoping trolley with a doll was a huge hit at one here, as was anything he could push, pull or ride on basically.... though they possibly have all this kind of stuff by the sounds.
